Movie synopsis:When Walt Disney's daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers' "Mary Poppins," he made them a promise-one that he didn't realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney's plans for the adaptation.

For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn't budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp.

It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

Missed the hike but made it to the movie and the dinner. New Year's Day at the City Line with hats and decorations seems like a tradition going way back, even though it's only the second time for me.

Loved the movie. I've only in the last few years come to appreciate that most writing has some autobiography in it, even if it's fantasy. It was good, although sad at times, to see where Mary Poppins came from.

Can't think of a better bunch of folks to open the New Year with.

Well their are caribou in Canada and they make these funny grunting noises. And believe it or not the people up their panic when there is a 4 inch snowstorm. Not like us rough and tough people.

    December 31, 2013

  • Susan

The weather for New city tomorrow is a balmy 33 degrees so one layer of thermals should suffice if you need them! Its’ a short hike so come get invigorated for the new year

    2 · December 31, 2013

  • Susan

Maybe our snow bird members will invite us all down! In the meantime please feel free to organize any trips you’d like. I would like to see the NOrthern LIghts and the giant redwoods but there are still plenty of places to discover in our great tri state area!

    December 31, 2013

  • jane

Anybody want to go north? If we're going to be cold, may as well go for broke--Quebec?

    December 31, 2013

    December 31, 2013

  • Carol

Looks like we have enough people who would go South. What do you think, Susan?

    December 31, 2013

  • Leo S

    Maybe Miami

    December 31, 2013

  • Carol

I agree with Martine. I think we should all head South!

Hi, hike and movie but will not be able to attend the dinner.

    December 31, 2013

  • Jay

Susan and crew: I just saw this event and I'm on the waitlist. For dinner maybe the overflow from private dining room could go to the Hard Wok buffet 1.3 miles from movie at 732 rt 304 new city. Leave feedback here. Any takers?

    December 31, 2013

  • Steve

    Hiking only ,, no dinner.

    December 31, 2013

  • Jonathan

    I'll be doing dinner only.

    December 30, 2013

  • marc

I'll back out to make room for someone else to go to dinner I wish the group a very Happy New Year

    December 30, 2013

  • Susan

Ronnie your email setting is blocked so I hope you see this message. The movie is open to the public, if you can get a seat. I suggest buying tickets on line to assure your seat as the theatres are not huge. The restaurant has limited space as we are in a private room.

    December 30, 2013

  • Carol

Unfortunately can't make it. Won't be at dinner either. Miss everyone.

    December 30, 2013

  • Rob

Sorry, am unable to attend. However, I strongly recommend "Saving Mr. Banks." I saw it with my sister and enjoyed it immensely. Folks applauded at the end. Emma Thompson is excellent.
