BEST Robotics is an extracurricular academic experience that engages students through teamwork, self-directed learning, apprenticeship, and problem solving. Students perform all of the work. Team mentors—engineers, technical professionals and scientists from industry—serve as guides to shepherd students through the engineering design process.

Frequently Asked Questions by Mentors

Who can be a mentor for Rocky Mountain BEST?

Adults who have a desire to help students achieve their maximum potential.

Do mentors/volunteers need to be engineers?

No. BEST teams are comprised of students, teachers, and both technical and non-technical volunteers.

How much time will it required?

At least six weeks, and up to nine weeks should your team advance to the regional competition (from mid-September through the mid-November). Expect about 2-3 hours per night, 1, 2 or 3 nights per week (depending on your team). Ideally, we will assign 3-6 mentors per team to reduce each individual mentor’s time requirements.

What makes up a BEST team?

Students, teachers, mentors, and a little enthusiasm.

Where does the mentoring take place?

Usually at the participating high school facility or other facilities compatible with team requirements.

Does it cost any money to be a mentor?

No.

Who provides the money for parts and materials to build the remote control vehicle?

Rocky Mountain BEST provides all materials and parts from contributions by our sponsors.

Can I mentor at a participating high school of my choice?

Yes. We encourage you to get your high school involved if they aren't already.

Are there any special preparations I need to make now to mentor?

No. Just contact us so that we can assign you to a participating school team. An August mentor/teacher orientation meeting provides the necessary information. We will be adding many helpful resources on our website as well.
