Square Top Mountain

Square Top Mountain is the 111th highest peak in Colorado at an elevation of 13,794 feet. It is located in Colorado's Front Range, near Guanella Pass,   Square Top is best characterized by its large summit area .

An easy ridge hike from Guanella Pass is the usual route for Square Top. Generally good access to the trailhead makes this a mountain that can be climbed year-round. Strong winds from the northwest sweep snow from a good portion of the route making it a safe outing for those with relatively little winter training.

Although this is an easy climb it still requires that you have all the appropriate winter gear including several layers, winter proof boots, mittens, etc.  if you have any questions send me an email.  Early weather reports call for some snow so that would make this even more fun :)

Peak Stats:

9.4 total miles

Elevation Gain: 2885 feet

Sill Level: Moderate

Duration:  2.5 hours up and 1.5 hours down

Starts at 11,669 feet and ends at 13,794 feet

Current Forecast is Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. Windy

I will be driving of course and can take 3-4 folks depending on how cozy you want to be.  So, we will need at least one other person to drive.

Updated Forecast : Saturday Mostly sunny, with a high near 36. Very windy, with a west wind 38 to 43 mph decreasing to 24 to 29 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 75 mph.

Awesome group of people. It was flipping cold, but I had a blast. Thanks for setting it up and getting us to the top.

Waited at the trailhead by the gate for you guys for about 25 minutes till 8:15a. Thought the meet time was 8a. Had a good hike to the summit but could have done without the long wait on the road. Passed the group on the way up.

So that was you that kicked our butt eh? Apologies for the mix up.

My worst nightmare.. the forecast was spot on. The gate was closed so we started up the road then Jason had a great idea to just shoot across a gully full of willows, yucky. But it saved us much time as we intersected the trail without issue. On the way up the peak we encountered 35-45 mph gusts which tested our will. But, as a team we decided to fight through it and make the summit. We had a great team today and kicked it good :). Great job All!!!

Just an idea... As an alternate, just in case the alpine goes all to hell, you guys should probably throw your rock gear in your car. Just in case ; )

With all of this texting back and forth I'm kind of confused where we're supposed to meet up. Is that still by fort restaurant or by the trail?

    November 30, 2012

    • Leonard M.

Sasha, sorry for the confusion. For those of you who want to meetup at the Fort I will be there at 6:00 am. The others can meet us at the trailhead at ~8:00 am. Please note that if we will not be waiting at the trailhead for anyone...

    • Sasha

No worries, I'll plan to meet you by the Fort then

It's about an hour to the pass from Morrison. If you leave there around 6a, is the group planning to stop for breakfast to arrive around 9a? I plan to meet at the pass. Also, if anyone else wants to bring a beacon and probe, I'll bring my gear and there should be enough snow to practice av search skills.

    • Leonard M.

Hey Dave, its two hours the way I drive ;). But yes we will probably make a pit stop along the way at least for coffee if nothing else. I doubt that there will be enough snow up there but I'll take my beacon as well to practice.. we can hide around rocks if there is no snow :)

I'll plan on being at the parking area a little after 8.

Ok ... Sooo I need to know how early to leave from Gunnison.
Where should I meet the group ... at the turn to guanella pass off 285 ? About what time will you get there?
Or up at the Bierstadt parking lot? About what time?

    November 30, 2012

  • Dana

I thought u meant Bierstadt trailhead by 9 - it takes me longer than an hour from Morrison to get up there adding in driving up the pass off 285

    November 29, 2012

    • Leonard M.

Dana it depends if the gate is open or closed. If it is open we will be at the trailhead by 8:00. If closed I am thinking closer to 9:00

And what are you talking about hiding in rocks and beacons?? Lol -

  • Kerry S.

Leonard, can I ask-how far is the round trip distance with the extra mileage for the closed road? Thank you.

    November 28, 2012

    • Leonard M.

Hi Kerry, Based on current trip reports it looks like the gate is still open but if it is closed its an extra 3 miles up the road so 1 hour up and 1/2 hour down that road. So total round trip would be around 5-6 hours. Should be done by 1:00 to 1:30 depending on everyone's speed.

Hmmm if the elusive Leonard Madrid is a captive audience, I could be tempted.

Glad you are coming! We can negotiate the storage deal during the hike :)

    1 · November 27, 2012

  • Dana

Well damn I better RSVP ... But only if I can get a few good men and a truck for 3 hours next weekend to move some furniture into storage. I will provide beer and food. :)

  • Leonard M.

All people who said they are not attending are going to be removed from my group in T-minus 1 hour.. LOL

  • Dana

    I am coming 285 side - u think hike finished by 1?

    November 27, 2012

  • Leonard M.

Hi Dana we are going to go up 285 and will probably be at the trailhead by around 9:00 am. They probably have gated off the access by now so we will have to do the obligatory 3 mile hike in to the trailhead. I dont know what its like from the Georgetown side.

Sounds like the pass was open this past weekend. A couple trip/condition reports on 14ers.com didn't mention walking the road.

What time will you be at the Bierstadt parking lot... Is that the th or what? I am coming early from Gunnison to Denver and thinking about the hike --
