Buffalo Mountain

Buffalo Mountain is the mountain on your right as you are heading west on I-70 past the Dillon Reservoir.  It's only a 12er but is a nice hike and the views are pretty decent.  It requires a bit of class 2 talus work above treeline after some pretty good elevation gain in the trees.  I'd guess about 6.5 miles roundtrip and 3000 feet of elevation gain.

Looks like a mostly dry week is forecasted for up there after Monday.  I'm thinking normal winter layers along with goggles, gloves, liners... it will likely be chilly.  We may not need snowshoes quite yet, but let's bring them just in case along with gaiters and microspikes.

Sorry about your camera, Sharon. With the way it was snowing I doubt anyone will find the camera until late spring. Hopefully we'll get enough pictures up here to where you won't miss the pictures you took too much.

It snowed about 75% of our 8-hour day but of course we got the summit! A good amount of trail breaking and scrambling on snowy rocks consumed most of the fantastic day. Sharon was a total trooper!

I didn't realize it was to snow that much more yesterday. Vail ski resort says 20" in the last week, Keystone says 12". Let's bring our snowshoes just in case. Let me know if you don't have snowshoes.

None of you have bailed yet so it looks like we are doing this! Look for Leonard's gray 4Runner across from the Conoco. If anything comes up or you're running late, my cell is[masked]-9162. Latest forecast on NOAA for Buffalo says... Snow showers likely, mainly before 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 24. Wind chill values as low as -4. Breezy, with a west wind 15 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Thanks, MaRk. I'll call if I decide to bail; did a run in the cold earlier today and am feeling a bit under the weather now, but hope I can rally. Also need to make sure that I brought enough clothing/gear with me when I moved out here at the end of September...not sure if I have my MicroSpikes, gaiters, etc...

I guess I forget it is mid-December already. No reason to start before daylight so I changed the time to 6:15am... and that is 6:15am at the Wooly Mammoth Lot. I'd expect a 7:30ish start from the trailhead. You guys can stop for coffee or whatnot on the way as there's no huge hurry to get started.

Are you guys still down for this? As of now, Weather.com shows a fair chance of snow showers throughout Friday night and 30% chance of snow showers for Saturday morning. Mountain-forecast.com shows mostly cloudy skies and light winds for Saturday morning. And finally, NOAA thinks 40% chance of snow on Saturday with mostly cloudy skies. I read all that as a system is passing through during the first part of the weekend but they don't know how much snow it will bring... so it could be just fine and even more calm than usual, but also with the potential to be socked in and snowing.
