This Saturday the 17th we get to do major digging. I learned a lot from using a tractor last weekend. The clay soil is so hard that even a big machine doesn't budge it. If we use a tractor again, it will have to be much, much bigger than the one I rented.

After studying the area for a long time on Sunday, I came to the conclusion that from this point, we will be better off forming the new beds by hand.

This means - good old pick-axe, spade fork and shovels.
I tested an area to prove this to myself. I worked for two hours, and was able to chisel out a 5' x 10' bed. This works out pretty well. We actually want to have 5' x 20' beds to make our calculations easy (100 square feet). With a group of us working, we can lay out plenty of beds in a day.

We put stakes out yesterday to see exactly what will fit. We have room for 13 full size beds (5'x20') and two more that will be 5'x10'.
In other words, we have a lot of room. We will be able to do some serious planting!
