Camping at Carolina Beach Memorial Day weekend

2nd Annual Memorial Day camping trip.

Let's spend Memorial Day weekend at the beach! Carolina Beach state park is on the North Carolina coast, 10 miles south of Wilmington, NC.

It has a marina, a secluded camping area, and is walking distance from the beach.  Also close by (for anyone that is interested) is the Fort Fisher historical site, aquarium,  and Bald Head Island and lighthouse is a short ferry ride away.

The camping fees are $20 per night and we will have 5 sites if there is enough interest. The sites are somewhat small and due to park regulations, you must stay on the tent paid.  However, we did not have a problem with this last year, everyone had a great time! We will split the camping fees among attendees, @$15 will cover both nights and is due May1st. No refunds will be granted.

Each campsite has a grill and a graveled parking area large enough for 2 vehicles - so this is car camping (no backpacks needed).  We will camp Saturday and Sunday night. Bring your tent (2 person tents preferred, if 4 person or above please be ready to share the tent), sleeping bag, camping gear, food, etc, and $ for car pooling.  For those interested we will have dinner at a local seafood restaurant on Saturday and a pot luck dinner on Sunday.  A meeting will be scheduled to discuss final arrangements 2 weeks before the trip.

    The payment was due on Saturday May 15th for the camping trip. I have not heard from many of you and have not received payment. If I do not hear from you or received payment by Wed, I will release 2 of the sites. You cannot show up at the meetup point on Saturday morning expecting to go on this camping trip if you have not paid or contacted me in advance. Thanks so much :-) to those of you who attended the planning meeting and/or have been emailing and calling me to work out the plans! For those of you who have not contacted me, I have also emailed you directly so you will have this information.

    I have a whisper-lite stove that I can bring to have an extra for heating water and cooking. I am seriously looking for a lightweight bkpacking tent, but as of now don't have one.     I also know how to drive a 15 passenger van I drive my kiddos a mini bus at my HS where I work! I however don't like to drive for more than 2 hrs☕I switch off with another and I'm good!! We rent from American Adventures from my program and may give us a discount if you share who we are! Tell we share free advertisement for them!

    Does cost of an include insurance. I will drive if neccessary. Plus cost must reflex gas included divided by 16. Do to taking everyones stuff. Group expense. Also makes sure seats can come out of van. Dont want seats. Loose too much room. Any comments appreciated.

    Lisa, good idea! I have looked into renting an SUV or mini-van, mainly to carry a lot of gear and can do so if all contribute, total cost is $255 for Memorial Day weekend. This would help with the number of cars going. I would like to keep costs as minimal as possible on this trip, but at the same time, I don't want someone to not go because of space issues. I do not feel comfortable driving a 15 passenger van though. It would be helpful to know who plans to bring their car, and if anyone has an suv. So please, if everyone would be so kind as to update your rsvp with comments of whether you would be willing to drive and whether you have a car, suv or van or if you would be willing to contribute toward a van or suv we can close out any worries on carpooling and gear.     Dames - just wanted to make sure everyone is aware this is not a normal carpool situation where we try to get as many people as possible in a vehicle as we do for hikes. Since we have camping gear, normally it will be 2 people per car with their gear, based on how much gear they have (tent, coolers, clothes, sleeping bag, folding chairs, etc). If someone has a van or SUV, is attending, and willing to load as much gear as possible, this may change. However, we do not know at this early point in time, if we will have an SUV or van available. With 16 people we will probably need 7 or 8 vehicles to make this trip, unless someone has an SUV or van. Last time we had 10 people in 4 vehicles, one of them was a van, which held a LOT of gear. Not everyone has to bring everything, both me and Wendy have cooking stoves, which we will share. We have time to work out the details, but I want everyone to understand this will not be a 4 person per vehicle trip.

    Fyi ladies when buying a tent 2 man tents room for 1. Four man tent room for 2 . Etc... Always divide it by two. I have an extra tent if someone needs it. I also have a stove and grill. People are welcome to use it.

    A detailed camping list will be emailed to each attendee in early April, but each person should plan on having their own tent, sleeping bag and pad, food and personal essentials. Remember REI rents camping gear and Walmart has a 2 person tent for @$25.
