BACKYARD BIODYNAMIC AGRICULTURE

How do Biodynamic Gardening principles compliment and expand Permaculture practices?

Speakers:

RACHEL SCHNEIDER: In her 20 years at Hawthorne Valley Farm, Rachel initiated and developed the farm’s CSA program and started the Farm Learning Center which provides professional training for beginning farmers and introduces biodynamic farming to the public.

MARGO MULLEIN: Margo joined the Hawthorne Valley Farm team in 2008 as an environmental educator and established the Day on the Farm program.

As the host, I was gratified to welcome so many folks (members and non-members). This event was so well-attended, it indicates the widespread interest in gardening approaches that are NOT likely to be practiced in local garden clubs or large-scale agricultural farms! Rachel Schneider provided a well-organized slide-lecture that explained biodynamic's interest in the cosmos beyond the sun to include the moon and the planets. The evening culminated when everyone participated in preparing a root-encouraging concoction made with cow manure that had been placed inside a cow horn and dug into the garden soil in the fall - retrieved in the spring. Rachel's vivid description of Rudolph Steiner, the originator of biodynamic gardening, and Hawthorne Valley Farm, the biodynamic center where she applies these principles, this practice appeared as reasonable and practical practices. My intention is to find a cow (if my lambs don't work) and try it!
