Trade, Barter, and Swap

Flea markets! Swap meets! Yard sales! Online barter sites! Skill and equipment shares!

Bring an item to trade! Something you want to get rid of, that has value (personal and/or monetary), that you would be willing to trade for something of equal value.

We'll consider ways of trading/bartering and selling used goods (as well as services) to benefit communities and keep stuff from going into landfills.

Each person will have a chance to do a simple cradle-to-grave life-cycle analysis of their tradable item — from raw material extraction through materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use, repair and maintenance, and disposal or recycling.

•  What raw materials were used in its construction and where they might have come from?

•  What energy inputs may have been required to manufacture it?

•  How its manufacture might have impacted the environment?

•  How it likely was distributed and the environmental impacts thereof?

•  How it has been used, by how many people, and what impacts its use might have had?

•  What will happen to it ultimately: go to a landfill, be recycled, be repurposed, etc.?

•  What effect would it have if sent to a landfill?

We'll talk about flea markets, yard sales, and other ways of getting rid of old stuff.

We'll consider issues and solutions around achieving a Zero Waste society (See

We'll discuss the uses of barter and give-away websites such as,, and!

It looks like someone other than me edited my post. Creepy.

Awesome - great to trade & hear the stories of what people brought!

I liked it. There was some confusion as to the way it was to work which would be expected for the initial event. If everyone brought something and talked about it, it would have been a very long meeting.

I'm sorry. I got the time wrong and showed up at 6 with my stuff. Couldn't wait. Hope to see you all another time.

Hi, I am part of Transition Marbletown. We were shaping an event that is the mirror of yours to take place on 4/9 at Marbletown Community center. When I saw your material I suggested to our group that we join efforts with you or just promote yours to Transition Town folks and all attend. What do you think?

    Howdy folks!

Want to liven up next Monday's Permaculture meetup? Let's make "Trade, Barter, and Swap!" a real swap meet by bringing up to 10 items each to trade/barter/or swap!

As before, be prepared to present a simple cradle-to-grave life-cycle analysis of one of your tradable items.

    • Let's talk about our experiences with flea markets, yard sales, and other outlets for repurposing old items!

    • Let's talk about skill and equipment shares as part of a barter economy!

We're looking forward to seeing all of you at the next meetup! And welcome to members of Transition Marbletown who will be joining us!
