Batting Practice starts at 9:15.
Games will start at 9:45 or as soon as there are at least 14 players present. If you can only show up late. So long as the teams aren't full we can squeeze you in or you can just play game 2. Leaving early is also fine.
Random teams for each game. We usually play one 9 inning game and another 5 inning game.
As we have for the past 3 years, we play without a permit as a pickup group so we move to backup fields when someone else does have a permit. It's not always easy to find out ahead of time when someone does have a permit but there are backup fields 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and 20 minutes away. Early in the season, Zog and another group are known to have a permit for the field at 12:00 so we end a little earlier.
We play when the field is dry and temperatures are above 45F.
It is free to play but I ask for $5 voluntary contributions which I collect at the beginning of the season and in the middle. This covers our expenses of meetup.com ($150/year) and clinchers (1 per week at $8 a pop). Donating brand new clinchers in lieu of cash is also great. I do prefer cash contributions to be electronic via the website because it's easier to keep track of: http://www.meetup.com/Roosevelt-Island-Adult-Softball/money
It is recommended that you wear cleats and bring your own mitt. Usually someone else brings a bat you can borrow if you don't have your own.
We like to hang out after the games at Riverwalk Bar for lunch and drinks (they give a discount on pitchers but they're still New York prices!) This year we also have a new venue for cooling off after games which is our very own 3 season veteran Coach Scot's Main Street Sweets.
Men and women of all skill levels are welcome. Ages 16 and up (just ask and we've always been amenable to accepting younger players sometimes so long as they can keep up and are unlikely to get hurt).
I really appreciate people RSVP'ing ahead of time because it gives me a chance to cancel the game if it looks like turnout will be weak (it has to be 15+). I have a hard enough time dealing with the weather. I wish meetup.com had kept the "maybe" option. I understand that some of you really may not know until the last minute so you can just RSVP "yes" and make a note of that (like "25% chance", "50% chance", whatever).
If you're not sure whether there's a game or if you show up late and we have moved, you can call me at[masked]-9364. Also call me to report anything you know about field conditions and availability. Unfortunately, I don't live on Roosevelt Island anymore and can no longer just look out the window to see whether the field is too wet.
Another 3 year vet and manager, Eric, runs our Facebook group so I encourage you all to join in on the discussions. We're going to hit our 100th meetup soon so maybe we'll plan something special there.
And, finally, as always, a very special thanks to Rick the Roosevelt Islander Blogger for many instances of helping us out.
