This is a hike to a spectacular peak on the Pacific Crest Trail. There will be great views in the Sugar Bowl area overlooking Truckee and Donner Lake. The hike is approximately 6 miles round trip (loop trail) with approximately 1700 feet elevation gain. Bring sturdy hiking boots, sun block, hat, lunch and at least 2-3 liters of water. Carpooling will be determined at the park-n-ride. The drive up will take about 1 hour 15 minutes. If you plan to meet us at the trail head the hike should begin at about 10:45am.
I hope to see you there!
Directions to the trailhead:
Get on I-80 East towards Reno
Go about 69 miles
Take the Soda Springs Exit (Exit 174)-Right after you see sign for Donner Pass Road
When you exit make a right at the first stop sign (onto Donner Pass Road/Old Hwy 40)
Pass the town of Soda Springs
It's just four miles from the Soda Springs exit of Interstate 80 to the head of our trail.
Drive past Sugar Bowl ski resort (past both an initial parking lot and main entrance) and turn right at the next cluster of buildings just up the road. One of the buildings is the Sugar Bowl Academy. You will also see the PCT trail sign. Park in the gravel spots to the right side of the parking lot or if you have an off road vehicle you can park along the road behind the buildings.
An old road behind the buildings leads to the trailhead. The trailhead is on the left side of the road past the porta potty.
