Day Light Savings Ride plus New Zealand Slide Show

Did you set your clock ahead for Daylight Savings Time? Be sure you set your clock one-hour ahead on Saturday night so you will be on time for this ride!

This will be a fun ride + food + slideshow event!

Note: Since the first posting of this event, there has been a correction to the route stats (formerly posted as 36-miles and 2,400 feet gain) and the food & slideshow schedule is revised to accomodate the slightly longer ride.

1:00pm - Ride: This is a true intermediate-level ride, approximately 40-miles, mostly flat, with a bit of climbing (1,800 ft) thrown in for fun. Route details posted below. I've requested that other ride leaders consider offering an alternate easier and/or more challenging route, so we may have more options. Check back later for developments!

4:30-ish - Food: We'll end the ride at Coyote's Bar & Grill in Hillsboro around 4:30 where we have the Banquet room reserved under "NW Butts on Bikes".

5:00-ish Slideshow: Michael and Carolyn Jen (ride leaders) just returned from New Zealand and will be sharing their photos of a bike trek they did along the west coast of the South Island. "Our cycling adventure was the highlight of our 3-week vacation (which included NZ and Fiji) and the best cycling tour we have ever done. Stunning! Incredible! A visual feast that left us begging for more!"

There are restroom facilities at the starting point.

This is an all-weather ride, only freezing weather will cancel it.

Pace and terrain rating. C/D and Terrain: 2 & 4

Type of ride: This is an intermediate level training ride. We will regroup at hilltops and major turns. If you are concerned about your ability to keep up, feel free to give it a shot, but be a good sport and be prepared to make your own way back if the pace is too much.

Weather Cancellation Policy. Only extreme weather will cancel this ride. ****************************************************

Mandatory for all riders.

Helmets must be worn at all times while riding. This is a requirement and not a request. Obey traffic laws and remember you’re a representative of the greater cycling community and should conduct yourself that way on the road. Represent us well!

Please ask for help if you are ill equipped prior to the ride, we will help if we can!

Great ride! So how close to the 42 mile ride was to that of riding in New Zealand? Road, weather condition, ect.
At first I thought the slide show was going to be about 'how to meet a man in New Zealand' but was pleasantly surprised about the travel pictures and riding info. ;)
You guys a cute couple! Thanks for sharing your trip!

Oh, Thank you Paul Johnson for honouring me the pleasure of riding with you. Do I now qualify as a manic rider?

Carol, you'll have to catch Michael with that comparative question, since I didn't ride the 41 I can't comment. As for how to meet a man in NZ, I would suggest you go to Fiji. The men are beautiful there!!!

A good ride, great pictures, and a lot of fun riding with some familiar folks I hadn't seen in a while. Thanks, Carolyn and Michael for a great afternoon all around.

http://www.naturalhigh.co.nz/ This is the website for Natural High, the cycling tour company we used for our self-guided trip of the South Island. They are located in both Christchurch (South Is) and Auckland (North Is.). We worked with Sandra but owner, Andy, is also terrific. Their specialty seems be all forms of cycling but they offer other tour services too (sea kayaking, for ex.). They are all avid cyclists which was a huge benefit. Highly recommend!

      March 10, 2013

yes, two groups. Mine will be the shorter route, slower pace. There is a little climbing but not a lot. We'll just set a pace and regroup as needed at the top. Come on out!

there was mention of a shorter ride is that still a possibility say around 20-25 miles? Since the season is just starting, I couldn't do 40 miles

    March 9, 2013

  • Carolyn J.

Sounds good, Eric. See you later in the afternoon :)

    March 7, 2013

  • Eric J W.

    Hi Carolyn,

A few of us are going to be starting a ride much earlier from my home to pick up more and harder miles. With this comes a need for showers and a change of clothes to be able to enjoy the slide show. (and a few beers don't hurt either.) I will be at the slide show but not the ride.

    March 7, 2013

  • Carolyn J.

Becky, estimated schedule is in the ride description. About 5:00 for slide show.

    March 7, 2013

  • Becky K.

We can't make the ride but will be there for the slide show. What time will that start?
    Becky

I always do the Plumlee- Carpenter Creek route the other direction. You get a longer faster downhill going down Plumlee.

Thanks MamaQuail you are right. Insomnia is closed Sundays. Will update the descript when I'm at my PC.

I'm maybe able to join, not sure yet, but I believe Insomnia is closed on Sundays... Just FYI :)

Great - the 40 mile route in 3.5 hours is perfect. Thanks for the extra hour, Carolyn!

    1 · March 1, 2013

  • Carolyn J.

Sorry, Adam, I left your name off that last post which was meant for you!

    March 1, 2013

  • Carolyn J.

I just added one our to our riding time. 2.5 hours didn't seem enough for 40 miles so now we have 3.5 hrs. Does that change your mind about joining us? Or do you still want me to post the shorter ride with you as leader (assuming no one else steps fwd?).

    March 1, 2013

  • Adam

Carolyn, I'd like to try your longer ride but I'd give myself about a 45 minute head start since I'm slower than you guys. But here's an offer -- if you post the easier ride as a separate event and get a lot of interest, I'd be willing to lead it if no one else volunteers. I'd prefer to do the longer one so hopefully someone else will step up.

    March 1, 2013

  • Eric J W.

I will be riding from home about 6 miles away.
