We've all been there, we hit a hill and watch others just cruise up while we struggle, or hit a headwind and it's like we drop anchor. Fight back! Do some homework! I propose doing this 3 mile round trip route every Tuesday and Thursday evening. It's a 1.47 mile out and back, ridden repeatedly, you really can't get lost.
The plan is for each of us to start at the same location at 6PM (if you are a little late no worries, just start up the hill when you get there) When you reach the top in just under 1.5 miles turn around, fly down the hill, and repeat! Wherever you are at 7:30 turn around and go downhill. I assure you, if you do this twice a week, it won't take long until you see that you are farther along before you turn around. It will pay off in spades no matter your cycling goals, or lack thereof this year.
Each 2.9 mile round trip gives right at 428 ft of climbing (as recorded on my gps, your results may vary!) All level of riders are welcome. We will all ride at our own pace (at your limit!) some will get multiple laps, some may not even get one in the beginning. It's all good. We all start somewhere. One thing assured, you WILL get better!
Ride leaders: Kevin, Monica, Ken, Jon, Rob
date: every Tuesday and Thursday evening
time: Pre ride bike futzing, introductions, and instructions at 5:45pm
pedals spinning starting promptly at 6PM
rating: training, hard to rate this. There is a HILL, you will ride up it as fast as you can. (no matter your fitness level this will be a workout. I think it was Greg Lamond who said it never gets easier, you just go faster.)
There is a group of us that usually meet somewhere close by following the ride for some food, drink, and bike rider BS. Join us!
With 6 event hosts the likelihood of at least one of us being there to send you off in the right direction is very high. If by chance the vagaries of rush hour traffic and hectic work schedules preclude that, and you are new to this ride, be sure to announce "My name is (X) and I'm new here". BOBers are good people, one of the regulars will be sure to fill you in on our routine.
BTW, the routine is to ride up to the top of Rocky Butte beginning at 6PM, make a loop around the top and go back down, as fast as you can. Repeat as many times as you can until wherever you are at 7:30 PM, turn around and go back down to the base of the hill. Remember how far you got on your last ascent. You WILL note improvement by the end of the second week, guaranteed. Everyone should be back to the bottom within a few minutes of each other. Normally there is a discussion on where to go for a post ride carbo-load.
Yes folks, this is way more fun than you might think it will be!
