"Ride Like A Girl" Beginners Learn to Ride in a Group: Banks-Vernonia (9mi)

Tuesdays in July are especially for First-timers and "Nervous Nellies". If you are an experienced rider, you are welcome to join us but be aware this will be a slow and easy pace. If it sounds too slow, consider riding with other Meetups, such as: Women on Wheels, Out Spoke'n, or Num Bunz. Also remember Portland Bureau of Transportation's "Women on Bikes" and Shift2Bikes.

Slow & Easy Banks-to-Vernonia Trail - 9.5 miles (plan 2 hours)

About the Ride:  If you have not been on the Banks-to-Vernonia Trail, you are in for a treat! It was the first trail I road when I bought my new mountain bike ten years ago - now it's PAVED! A wonderful ride for newbies and "Nervous Nellies"; beautiful, easy, with just a hint of an incline that you won't even notice (makes for an even easier return ride). This is a paved bike/pedestrian/horse trail (no vehicles) through one of Oregon's beautiful forests. We will start at the Banks-Vernonia trailhead, ride about 4-4.5 miles, turn around and ride back. We willl take our time, ride together and no one will be left behind.

Meeting Point: Parking lot of the Banks-Vernonia Trail head at NW Banks & Sellers Road in Banks, Oregon.

The Route: This is our route, created with an online tool called "Ride With GPS". I will usually post a link to the route so you can see where were are riding, zoom in for details, view the specs (distance, elevation gain, etc.), view the cue sheet (a turn-by-turn street guide of directions).

  • Helmets must be worn at all times while riding. This is a requirement for all NW Butts on Bikes rides. This is one of the basic (and simple) ways we protect ourselves from injury. Please don't forget your helmet!
  • Bring a right-size spare tube. If you get a flat, we can probably help, but you need to supply the tube!
  • Your bike must be in in good working order. If you're not sure, stop by a local bike shop and ask a mechanic to look it over for safety and basic ridability. Western Bikeworks on NW 17th and NW Lovejoy is one of many friendly shops that are happy to do this. Anything more technical than a flat and you may need to walk the route or call someone for help. Let's do our best to avoid those scenarios by having your bike in good shape!
  • Cell phone Never go on a ride without one!

Strongly recommended:

  • riding/cycling gloves helps keep a good grip in spite of perspiration; protects your hands from blistering, and protects your skin in the unlikely event of a fall.
  • sun/riding glasses (protection yourself from the sun and little flying bugs that can wreck your vision in an instant!)
  • Water: Available at the trailhead - just remember to bring your bottle.

Restrooms: Available at the trailhead.

Weather Policy: This ride will only cancel for heavy rain. Light showers are no big deal, especially for such a short ride. Consider wearing a light wind breaker type jacket if showers are in the forecast. (I can't tell you how many times that days with showers in the forecast turned out to be dry and beautiful.)

I'm coming from Vancouver hwy 14 . Have any idea travel time for commuter traffic? I've never been to Banks

Traffic can be a bit heavy into Hillsboro around 8-8:30 and I'm guessing the same for Portland. You may want to leave extra time and if you're early find a coffee shop. Starbucks located just off hwy 26 on Imbrie Dr in Hillsboro. Prob others in Banks
