"Ride Like A Girl" Beginners Penn Xing to Kelly Point + PICNIC (15mi)

Peninsula Crossing to Kelly Pt Park (15mi) PLUS PICNIC

Pack yourself a picnic lunch for this ride, as our mid-point destination is Kelly Point Park!

About the Ride: This is a flat and easy 15-mile ride on paved bike paths and wide sidewalk trails. We will start at the Princeton Street trailhead in North Portland, follow it across Columbia Blvd (at Portsmouth) and take Marine Drive Trail to Kelly Point Park. We'll find a good spot for a picnic lunch and then reverse our route to return to the starting point. The route details can be viewed here: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2471149

Lesson: TBD

Meeting Point: North Princeton Street and Carey Boulevard. The well-marked Peninsula Crossing trailhead is at this L-shaped intersection with lots of free street parking.

Required:

• Helmets must be worn at all times while riding.  This is one of the basic ways we protect ourselves from injury.

• Bring a right-size spare tube. If you get a flat, we can probably help, but you need to supply the tube!

• Your bike must be in in good working order.  If you're not sure, stop by a local bike shop and ask a mechanic to look it over for safety and basic rideability.  Help us avoid those unexpected breakdowns since we do not have mechanical support on our rides.

• Cell phone : In case you have bike trouble and need someone to pick you up.

• No ear buds or listening devices.  For safety reasons, please leave your music at home or in the car.  We need all riders to be fully alert; wearing ear buds can be a distraction and increases the risk for the group.

Strongly recommended:

• Cycling gloves helps you keep a good grip in spite of perspiration; protects your hands from blistering, and protects your skin in the unlikely event of a fall.

• Sunglasses will protect you from the sun and little flying bugs that can wreck your vision in an instant!

• Water: Remember to fill and bring your water bottle.  Water may or may not be available at the start.

Restrooms: None at the trailhead (starting point) but restrooms are available at Kelly Point Park.

Pace and Terrain: This is a beginner ride with an easy pace of 10-13 mph. This is a comfortable riding speed for new cyclists and beginners. It is mostly flat on paved bike trails and extra wide sidewalks. We will cross two busy streets (Columbia Blvd and Marine Drive). Using the scale below, I would rate as B1. For more information, contact Carolyn at [masked].

Ride Difficulty Scale For Road Rides B1

Weather Policy: This ride will only cancel for heavy rain. Light showers are no big deal, especially for such a short ride. Consider wearing a light wind breaker type jacket if showers are in the forecast. (I can't tell you how many times that days with showers in the forecast turned out to be dry and beautiful.)
