Crater Lake Ride

A few (11) of us are doing the annual Crater Lake ride on August 23rd, Saturday. There is place for 7 more people in the campsites now. (See camping section below)

RSVP:

Since there are very limited spaces available, please be 100% committed when RSVPing. If you are not sure, please wait it out & take your chances.

I will need payment to 'secure' your space.

Route:

We ride out from Diamond Lake campsites (already booked) and 'work' our way to lake, ride around the rim - clockwise, and head back down.

Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/4924159#

Ride:

This is a challenging ride that is compounded due to elevation & distance. If you have not done a long ride OR been climbing hills, you WILL find this ride challenging. (Good news: There is time for you to get ready though if you start from today, 4th June. ;-) )

Ride is a non-regroup ride and we will stop for the sights, sounds, smells, etc. This is a SOCIAL ride and not a race.

Riders usually roll back down starting @ 2.30PM to 5PM. Evening dinner is a potluck.

On Sunday, few of us ride around Diamond lake for fun & head back to our 'dreary' lives and relive the previous 2 days. :-)

Food & Water:

In one word: None. You will need to carry a backpack or something for extra water, etc. The lodge is almost 44 miles into the ride & if the weather is hot, you will run out of water on reaching the Crater Lake turn!!!

But if we get SAG support that changes everything.

SAG:

Last year we had SAG support with a couple of spouses helping us out. Plus Ann's family helped.

This year we don't have any. BUT, if any of you have your spouse or family member camping & not riding, please beg/borrow/steal their time to help us. We will be in their favor. (Hit me up offline if you can.)

Camping:
I have already made the campsite reservations (two sites A006 & A007). Suggested max occupancy is 16 adults between the two sites.

http://www.recreation.gov/camping/diamond-lake/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70187

11 spaces have been accounted for. We have place for 7 additional adults (including non-riders) which is pushing the suggested limit.

P.S: If you can snag a campsite & invite others, all the more fun. Let me know & I'll open it up to an additional 7 more people.

Payment:

And the cost is $10/for two nights (Sat & Sun) per space.

I will send you my address for you to get me a check. Or you can pay me via Paypal.

BoB Rules, Etc:

As ever, all BoB + ODOT rules apply. Meaning helmet is required even if ODOT does not recommend it. Carry spares, etc. Make sure you & your bike are in perfect working order. This ride is no fun if either has issues. ;-)

Bring a camera. Have fun. Enjoy the ride. Don't ride @ someone else's pace/speed/etc. This is YOUR ride. Make the best of it. We all get to the camp & will wait for you to eat together. :-)

Any Qs, hit me up.

Well, I got that out of my system. But that was a lot of fun. Great group of riders. Many thanks to the folks in the Toaster.

Road closed ONLY. M-F WE will BE OK!!

Be ready. Last I read part of the loop was closed due to "road mitigation," meaning a slide that required repairs before reopening. Off course that could have been completed by now.

I am interested to join this cycling trip to Crater Lake; but, I am wondering if I can carpool with someone to the Diamond Lake campsite and if so, what day and time of departure from the Portland area. I live in Beaverton but I can meet anywhere in the Portland metro area.

I leave on Thursday noon and return on Monday late. FYI I'm MTBing @ Waldo Lake on Monday.

I am also an avid mountain biker and as I remember, I've ridden in Waldo Lake. You have a great plan, I wish I can carpool with you and do road and mtb on the trip to Crater Lake; but, I cannot take Thursday and Monday off. I'll try to carpool with someone who can leave the Portland area Friday afternoon and back anytime on Sunday.

I did the Crater Lake ride when they closed the roads to cars this past June...first time on a road bike....went my own speed and it was very challenging...but worth it!

Sorry, I've changed my mind about this ride. I can't believe how the group has dwindled! I hope those who still go have a blast.

Thanks for clarifying, Ann. I remember being disgruntled by this policy on another camping trip where we had to pay extra for a small car when the people with the giant RVs didn't have to pay a dime!

I h8 to agree but that is the situation. Late arrivals will need to park at the entrance gate. Car pooling is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

each site includes one vehicle. all others pay a $5 fee (i think thats what it cost.)
So with 2 sites paid for 2 cars are included. Max has suggested carpooling for this reason, because it a long drive, and limited on-site parking.
(I believe we fit 3 cars at each site. only 2 fit at my site.)
the rest of the cars have to park by the shower/restrooms about 1000 feet away.

Max, about the camping -- your reservation is for Saturday and Sunday nights, not Friday and Saturday? Don't we need to camp Friday to ride on Saturday?

I notice the campsite descriptions specify just one vehicle, but we will certainly need more than one for eight people. Can you clarify?

Max, I signed up for this ride before you posted the route and details. If I don't feel up to doing the full ride from the campground, would it be OK to meet people up at the lake and ride from there? I know I don't do as well at higher elevations, so this would be a way of conserving some energy.

Hi Keith, that'd be great! Thanks!

I am going to be 65 a few days before the ride so I think a 65 mile ride with 6700 ft. of climbing works real well. If you don't mind this will be my birthday ride. I will bring lots of booze to celebrate.

Hi, Max. My wife will be going, but not riding. I"m assuming that she doesn't sign up then. Correct?

    • Max

Hello Ed: I have updated the desc. Please read through it & let me know if you have any more Qs. (The answer to your Q is : Yes. She needs to be 'signed' up for the space. But since you signed up 'first', I'll add a guest to your name.)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
