"Ride Like A Girl" Beginners Learn to Create a Route and a Ride!

About the Ride: We will start in NW Portland at Western Bike Works and over coffee, we'll talk about how to read and follow a bike map (a great skill to have for meandering around this Great City!). Then, YOU will lead ME to several destinations around town.

Many of you have been riding with me all Spring & Summer. We've learned a lot and this ride will help us put many of our new skills to use: cycling on bike paths and roads via  bikeways & bike paths, riding safely as a group, practicing good ergonomics, planning a route, and having fun!

The Route: Well, now, that will be up to YOU!

Lesson: How to read a bike map and create a route.

Parking: Come a bit early to find a parking spot. Consider carpooling to make it easier (and cheaper). If you drive north of Western about 4-5 blocks you'll find free street parking and options for up to 5-hour parking. I don't know how long the ride will be, but I don't think we'll exceed 5 hrs, estimating closer to 4, but that's a guess. Please expect the ride to be longer than our usual rides.

Required:

Helmets must be worn at all times while riding. This is a requirement for all NW Butts on Bikes rides. This is one of the basic (and simple) ways we protect ourselves from injury. Please don't forget your helmet!

Bring a right-size spare tube. If you get a flat, we can probably help, but you need to supply the tube!

Your bike must be in in good working order. If you're not sure, stop by a local bike shop and ask a mechanic to look it over for safety and basic ridability. Western Bikeworks on NW 17th and NW Lovejoy is one of many friendly shops that are happy to do this. Anything more technical than a flat and you may need to walk the route or call someone for help. Let's do our best to avoid those scenarios by having your bike in good shape!

Cell phone Never go on a ride without one!

No ear buds please

Strongly recommended:

Riding/cycling gloves helps keep a good grip in spite of perspiration; protects your hands from blistering, and protects your skin in the unlikely event of a fall.

Sun/riding glasses (protection yourself from the sun and little flying bugs that can wreck your vision in an instant!)

Restrooms: Available at Western and along the route

Pace and Terrain: This is a beginner ride with an easy pace of 12-14 mph. This is a comfortable riding speed for new cyclists and beginners. It is mostly flat on both paved bike trails and roads. Using the scale below, I would rate as B2. For more information, contact Carolyn at [masked] or[masked]-3534.

Ride Difficulty Scale For Road Rides

Flatland Windless Cruising Pace: A/B - 2

Weather Policy: This ride will only cancel for heavy rain. Light showers are no big deal, especially for such a short ride. Consider wearing a light wind breaker type jacket if showers are in the forecast. (I can't tell you how many times that days with showers in the forecast turned out to be dry and beautiful.)

I couldn't agree more with Trudy - you all should be very proud!!! You climbed Mount Tabor and that gains you bragging rights! Great job leading me around Portland. Well done.

A great ride! It was good to see everyone; we learned a lot! My first time riding the two bridges. Also good experience riding with lots of traffic.

You all should be very proud of yourselves for making it up to the top of Mt. Tabor via the hardest route on a hot day! I was impressed! Sorry I had to abandon early, but I didn't get a parking ticket, thank goodness, even though I was an hour overtime.

I absolutely loved this ride. Such a fun idea. So sorry I had to get back to my car... Should have left it at home. :)

Oops I double booked this morning! I'm so sad to miss this. Somehow didn't get it on my calendar. Have fun!

Sorry to cancel so late, but I was trying to reschedule (with no luck) a class I have to attend for work. I was really looking forward to this event as I am terrible at routing. Is there any chance there may be another map reading/route planning event in the future? Hope everyone has a good time.

Sciatica flare up, a real "bummer". Melanie, please hang onto my black gloves till next ride. Thanks. Have fun all.

I will be attending the training, only, also... as Judith mentioned, below.. so have changed RSVP for another rider

  • Judith A.

    Okay, will do.

Hi Carolyn. Just want to advise you that I'll be attending the training part only of our bike schedule this coming Monday. Thank you:)

    August 21, 2014

    • Carolyn J.

Okay. Will you change ur RSVP to no so another person can join the ride? You can still come to the training.

Just curious as I have been a part of this group for quite a while but too intimidated to try going for a group ride since I don't have a ton of experience; this looks like the perfect ride to start with! I am on the wait list since it was already full when I saw the posting for this group. My question is: Would there be any point to just showing up so that if someone doesn't come I can take there place or is there a very high show rate for these type of events?

    August 20, 2014

    • Carolyn J.

As for the waitlist, it often clears by the day of the event, so keep your eye on your email inbox (you should be notified if you get moved in). If we have less than 17 riding you can join us, but if we have a full group I will ask you to come another time.

      August 21, 2014

    • Carolyn J.

What I mean is that you are welcome to attend the training session but the ride will be dependent upon who is RSVP'd and if we have room (max 17).

I have a bunch of highlighters that I will bring.

    1 · August 20, 2014

  • Judith A.

I have one highlighter I can bring. I do have a question Carolyn, so I can ensure proper staffing here in my adult foster home, how long do you think would the "lecture" be and how long would the actual ride be? I know you mentioned we won't go over 5 hours that day but I may be able to ride up to 1:30-2 only bit it's still not final.

    August 20, 2014

    • Carolyn J.

Expect 5 hours and possibly longer. We do not have a defined route so I cannot tell u where we will be. You would probably need to be prepared to ride back by yourself. You can also attend the training and skip the ride.

      August 20, 2014

  • Trudy H

I have one I can bring (and three more than are "dead").

    1 · August 20, 2014

  • Mary S.

I have a couple you can have but I am on the waitlist.
Will bring them if I get on the roster

    1 · August 20, 2014

  • Carolyn J.

I need some yellow highlighters. Four would be great. Does anyone have some they could bring for the class? We will give them back!

    August 20, 2014

  • Carolyn J.

This will be a "hands on" class where you will be reading maps for a variety of activities. If you need your reading glasses make sure to bring them ;)

    August 20, 2014

  • Carolyn J.

This ride is not conducive to a large group so I am not setting the max at 17. Please be sure to remove your RSVP if you decide not to attend. Wait listed folks will be notified when an opening is available. If you change your mind, please also remove your RSVP!!
