  • Day 1: Union Station (Amtrak) to Longview.
    Day 2: Longview to Astoria
    Day 3: Astoria to Garibaldi
Day 4: Garibaldi to Lincoln City
Day 5: Lincoln City to Waldport
    Day 6: Waldport to Florence
    Day 7: Florence to Eugene
Day 8: Eugene (Amtrak) to Union Station.

Days average around 55 miles. I'm assuming a pace of 13-15 mph loaded touring speed. Participants responsible for arranging lodging and meals but I will share arrangement information as well as other general information. And maybe host a pre-ride organizing meeting. RSVP if you're interested and I'll start more detailed ride planning. We'll be following Adventure Cycling Association Oregon Coast route maps.

This ride can be scheduled the first or second week of September depending on which week works best for those interested.  Probably limited to ten riders as Amtrak Cascades only allows 10 bikes per train but maybe other options are available.

Would it be possible to camp out for this trip?

This looks like such a great event! If I wasn't already biking the in the Black Hills I would be there. Next time! Amtrak is starting a bike friendly program...free and not boxing.

Laura, I've placed my bike and panniers in the Amtrak Bus luggage compartment from Salem to PDX without any issues.

Oh, by the way, Bolt Bus from Eugene to Portland takes unboxed bikes. The stations are about five blocks from each other. It might be an option if the train is full going north. I took it to Bellingham recently and it worked out quite well.

Glad to hear it, Dale, and glad you called. I interpreted baggage to include bicycles but if they said different, that's awesome! By the way, I looked into a loop between here, Centralia, Aberdeen and the Washington coast. What killed it was from Woodland to Kalama. It's either I-5 (legal per WSDOT; I called) or Green Mountain Road which is an 800' climb, a chunk of which is at 10%+.

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for the heads up. My understanding is that the bikes are not considered baggage on the Amtrak Cascades route. I just called Amtrak and they confirmed that 10 bikes can be loaded in the baggage car in Portland and unloaded in Longview/Kelso except on the 4:12 pm train.
