RuffTail Runners Training!

  • Mar 2, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We've survived the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon, and we're back!

This training session is required to participate in the RuffTail Runners program. You only have to attend once, and it should take an hour and a half, not including the time you might spend running with a dog (or two. or three.).

Here's how this will work:

  1. RSVP to this MeetUp.
  2. You'll be required to pay a fee of $10 (more on this below).
  3. We'll close the RSVPs at 10:00pm on Thursday, 2/28.
  4. On Thursday night, we'll email everyone that RSVP'ed a password and a link that they can use to register and sign the online waiver. Please get this done by 5:00pm on Friday afternoon. Your MeetUp RSVP is NOT your registration!
  5. Show up on time!
  6. Bring your ID and cell phone!

Please consider carefully before participating in the program. We have trained well over 1,200 people, but a very small percentage of those trained participate on any regular basis. We really need to focus the training on people who will participate on a continuing basis. If you are looking to train a group, or are looking to meet required service hours for a student group or other reasons, please consider other needs Austin Pets Alive! has for volunteers.

A few notes:

  • Don't bring your own dog. Or monkey. Actually, monkeys riding dogs are always funny.
  • If you can't make it to this training session, please be patient. As soon as another training session is scheduled, it will be posted on MeetUp, which will send you an email. If it's not posted, we don't yet know when it will be.
  • MeetUp's waiting list function is no bueno. It is not first-come, first-served, but it's a free-for-all. Unfortunately, there's not much we can do about this. Please note that a LOT of people want in. While this is great, there are always people that want an exception made just for them, or proclaim that they'll just show up. I'm sorry, if nothing else, we're going to be as fair as possible about this. We usually have training sessions every couple of weeks, so just be patient, and stay tuned.
  • Children are welcome, though they must be 16 or older to hold a leash, and 18 or older to participate alone. If they're participating, they must RSVP and register (parent or guardian will e-sign the registration for a minor). Children just accompanying an adult do not need to RSVP or register.
  • You can bring your own leash, but not your own dog.
  • Yes, 8:00am is early. That is Lindsay's fault.

Why the fee? We hope the fee will bring in people who really want this and will actually show up, and who will make this something of an ongoing commitment. The Austin Humane Society charges $35, so this is not unprecedented. The fee will be used to promote the program, buy adopt-me vests and leashes, etc., and some of it will be donated to other animal charities.

Once you've gone through the training, you'll be able to run with the dogs. You can even run with the dogs that day, weather permitting, so come ready to run!

Rob, you take a lot of shit. I think you are doing a great job. I waited six months for a training session that worked with my work schedule. I didn't mind. Thank you Lindsay for the early session. You guys are freaking great and I want you to know that most of us who volunteer out of the kindness of our hearts understand that there are simply not enough of you guys to go around, and that you are doing the best you can with your resources. Good job, and chin up. If people don't have grace and patience for each other, how might they have treated the sweet, though sometimes challenging, pups that we are all here for, after all?

    Anyway, thanks again.

I RSVPd to Sat Trg Session but no e-mail after Thursday night. Am I still on waiting list? I thought I was scheduled for training if I could make and made payment. Now I have no idea where I am at since didn't receive e-mail to respond to my RSVP with payment. Thanks.

Hi Rob, I have been waiting for the training.....now I am only on a waiting list...my suggestion is to create a online video training.....Delilah Gomez [masked]

      March 1, 2013

    • Rob H.

Delilah, if you actually saw what we do, and how much we still have to walk people through the process, after it's been explained, demonstrated by us and other trainees, and if you consider the level of responsibility to the volunteers, the dogs, participating shelters, and public, that is on all of us in handling these dogs, you would see that online videos would not even begin to cover that responsibility. Really, if anything, our sessions need to be half the size, and much more selective about who is cleared to run the dogs. I'm sorry you feel upset enough to not even want to participate, and to say in your departure email that we don't believe your time is valuable. But we're going to do this right for everyone involved, and make that as convenient as we possibly can.

It was long, but very informative. Can't wait to take a dog out!

    March 2, 2013

  • John

Rob, you guys really have to make this process easier for us. Trying to RSVP and being added to a waiting list then not being able to pay online isn't doing anything to help those dogs. Some of us are excited and very serious about participating but it's been impossible to RSVP and pay online. Maybe try a registration process that's not so dependent on hit or miss technology. Hope to get in on the next round of training...

    March 1, 2013

    • Rob H.

John, I appreciate that you want to participate, and I understand your frustration. But to be fair, with the hundreds of people we've run through the program, we haven't had any issues using PayPal, which is not exactly hit-or-miss technology. I'm sorry I didn't see and reach out to you about your previous comment, but I wish you had actually sent us an email so that we can help you out. We hope to have another training session in the next several weeks, and we hope to see you then. If you can't figure out PayPal at that point, let me know.

      March 1, 2013

    • John

The problem wasn't w/ PayPal Rob [used it the other day]. It was the "pay online" feature in the e-mail you sent me. I never could get the process started. Sorry man, wasn't going to say anything but just thought you should know. Next time around fo sho....

  • Joel D.

Rob, I too RSVPd to the training tomorrow morning as well and intend to be there at 8 A.M., however I just want to make sure that I am for sure scheduled for tomorrow. Please let me know otherwise I will be there early tomorrow morning.

    March 1, 2013

    • Rob H.

Joel, it looks like you did the same thing. You RSVPed for the regular running with the dogs on Saturday, not the thing that is titled RuffTail Runners training. So, I'm sorry, but you won't be on the roll for tomorrow morning. Stay tuned, we are likely to have another training session in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

Already paid, hoping to get in on this training! :)

Hi Rob, yes.. just emailed you :)

      March 1, 2013

    • Joel D.

Rob, My email confirms that I am attending the training in the morning, I just want to make sure that is correct?

      March 1, 2013

  • Shelby W.

Hi Rob, I missed the registration time. Is it possible to register late?

    March 1, 2013

  • Mary

What's Rob's email?!? Registration keeps telling me I have the wrong password but I don't know what other password!

    March 1, 2013

    • Rob H.

Stacia, MeetUp doesn't show an RSVP for you, and PayPal doesn't show a payment for you...

      March 1, 2013

    • Stacia W.

mmm, ok. After I replied yes I thought there would be a PayPal button, after not seeing that I thought perhaps I would get it in the email with the password. That's ok, I'll figure it out for next time. So next time, just to be clear...I will RSVP and Pay at the same time, wait for a confirmation email with a password and then do as it says?

  • Samantha F.

    Hi, Rob:
I just emailed you but wanted to let you know that the registration link you provided in your message leads to a Rufftail Runners page that doesn't contain any registration prompts.
It has the following text: "The page you've requested can not be displayed. It appears you've missed your intended destination, either through a bad or outdated link, or a typo in the page you were hoping to reach."
There is also an area to donate followed by a list of "Recent Posts."
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks so much,
    Samantha

    • Rob H.

I know I already replied to your email, Samantha, but for anyone else - you should use the link sent in the second email. I know the links read the same, but the hyperlink in the first connected to a now-nonexistent page.

I'm waiting on training for Austin pets alive. Is there absolutely no availability for this Saturday morning? I can be contacted at[masked] or [masked] please!

    February 28, 2013

    • Rob H.

Hi, Joel - I'm sorry, as you can see, there's 29 people on the waiting list, which we probably shouldn't even keep, since it usually only gets used for a handful of people that can't make it. We'll have another in the next few weeks.

      February 28, 2013

  • Freda

I'm ready - see you there.

Not successfully. Cassidy will only lead you to shame and ridicule. :)
