We were going to go low-key with this month's run, but given the tragedy in Oklahoma this week, we declared "challenge accepted," and decided to see what we could do in just a few days.
As in other natural disasters, some of the most heartening and affirming stories we see are of people left with nothing but their pets. We see he rescue dogs hard at work, working their way across and through debris, often injuring themselves. They like to work, it's what they're trained for, but we also know that they feel the urgency, that they feel the relief and elation when someone is found in rubble.
So, this pub run will be dedicated to Oklahoma, and the proceeds will go to the local humane society or other large-impact group up there that is helping with the animals. It is our hope and belief that the human toll will be addressed as well as money can do, but that we can help with the care of pets, their hopeful return to their owners, and where necessary, their rehoming.
Pinthouse Pizza has stepped up to host us, and we're nailing down two other locations for about a three mile, easy run.
Wear red (if you must), or better yet, your OKC Thunder jersey. Kevin Durant, always a leader, has donated a million dollars for relief efforts, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him out there digging.
- Bring a $5 minimum donation;
- Bring your ID, and maybe a dry shirt for the end;
- All locations have outdoor areas that are friendly to well-behaved dogs (and mine), though it will probably be a bit warm;
- In case of rain, we're going to camp at Pinthouse and have a good time.
Note: this in no way constitutes our support for the University of Oklahoma. But we will refrain from trash-talking.
