Changes to Jog-a-Dog

Hey Joggers,

Some of you have noticed changes to who we can run with for Jog-a-Dog. This decision was made by the behavior team at APA to ensure certain dogs are getting the appropriate training that will help them find their forever homes.

The long and short of it is this: Dogs who have pink or green collars (and have been approved for JAD) are good to go. If the dog has been JAD approved but have a silver or orange collar on, you will need to attend a special behavior training in order to run with them. This doesn't mean the dog will turn into Cujo or anything - it just means they need some special attention. They might nip at smaller dogs or they're probably shy.

Here's the breakdown on the behavior classes:

BOO! (Basic Orange Orientation) - This is a one hour session aimed at familiarizing volunteers with basic info on handling the orange collared (shy/fearful) guys. Once the orientation is successfully completed, volunteers can handle the unlocked orange dogs (locked orange dogs would require Mike's approval), This class is offered Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings at 6PM. The sessions are limited to three people so sign-up is required.

Level 1 Dog handling - This is the intro class for APA! dog handling and focuses on APA! handling protocol and basic skills such as leash walking, sit, down etc...the classes meet for an hour once a week for 5 weeks. There is a waiting list for this class, but it is worth the wait!

Level 2 Dog Handling - To be invited to the level 2 class, volunteers must have successfully completed Level 1 training. Level 2 builds on the skills learned in level 1, introduces new skills, and involves working with some of the more challenging dogs. Level 2 training must be successfully completed before handling the silver dogs.

If you would like to sign up for these classes, please email Laurie at

On a different note...

We have two SPIbelt leashes. These must be returned to the front desk after your run. We will also receive new Ruffwear leashes in the next week or so. These too, must be returned to the front desk. These are for Jog-a-Dog only. We don't want them left for the "masses" because they will never find their way back to our desk. We also got a lot of "adopt me" vests for the dogs. Just like the leashes, these must be returned to the front desk because we ordered them specifically for Jog-a-Dog.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You're the best.
