No, it's not a tractor pull and monster truck show.

It's the running of the 22nd Austin Marathon and Half Marathon.

This means a couple of things:

First, we still want you to come run the dogs. Many of your fellow RuffTailers, and about 30 Team Spiridoners, will be running the event, and it'll be a fun opportunity for RTR to show up, wear their RTR shirts (available for $15 cash at APA!), and support your running buddies and the runners in general.

The course runs down Cesar Chavez, and will pass the shelter at about mile 9, so the lead runners will be there at about 7:45, and the rest of the pack will peak at 8:30.

It'll be fun to watch for you and most of the dogs (some of the shy ones may not dig it). Head out towards the trail as you usually would, and stand along the bike path. Signs are welcome!

Just make sure to:

  • Keep Fluffy out of the roadway;
  • Maintain your spacing with any other dogs;
  • Be aware of others around you, and of any bikes; and,
  • Keep an eye on Rover to make sure he's enjoying himself.

The next thing is, you need to plan for traffic and parking, but it won't be that bad, if you plan well and take the right route. Many people run around flapping their arms wildly, proclaiming the end of the world, when, for the vast majority of people, it's not an issue.

To get to APA, head south on Lamar from 6th. After you go under the railroad trestle, take the next right, on BR Reynolds - you won't be able to go to Cesar Chavez, but you'll be able to go down, park at the far end of the road past the Y, cross the little creek, and get you a dawg.

The last runner should be clear of Cesar Chavez by 10:30, and the roads reopen behind the last runner and clean-up convoy.

For more info on road closures, go to, and pick the Traffic tab. If you reeeeally still need help, feel free to ask me. One of my jobs for years with the race was getting yelled at by a wide variety of Austinites about traffic.
