  • As stated in Event Text

Hello dear hikers! How was your bank holiday? Its time to start thinking about how to spend the next one! I have some spaces free on this amazing weekend trip to the Lake District on May bank holiday, the price INCLUDES transport (by luxury coach), accomodation in a three star hotel (shared twin or double room) and three course dinners and full English breakfasts on both days! Total bargain I think you'll agree! I hope you will join us....

Becca :-)

***and a hike with Cath on the second day - see below***

For all questions on this trip please contact Rebecca not Cath - Thank you!

Come along with us and explore the rugged and wild beauty of the Lake District! Over three days we will travel by luxury coach, but also by steam train and boat, exploring stunning lakes and forests, soaring fells, ancient stone circles, picture-postcard villages and towns and follow in the footsteps of the great Romantic poet William Wordsworth. We will stay overnight at the excellent three star Cumbria Grand Hotel, in the quaint Edwardian town of Grange-Over-Sands on the beautiful Cumbrian coast, where we will enjoy a delicious carvery dinners on Friday and Saturday and full English breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday to set us up for a busy days of exploring!

We will leave London bright and early to make the most of our first day. Our first stop will be Lakeside, on the southern tip of stunning Lake Windermere. Here we will board a steamer and take a 40 min cruise up the lake to Bowness-on-Windemere, the only town which sits on the lake shore. Here we will have free time to explore (perhaps check out The World of Beatrix Potter for a Peter Rabbit fix) before we hop back on the coach and head to the Adams Family Mansion, ahem, I mean The Cumbria Grand Hotel, where we will have time to check in and relax before a carvery dinner. If you're feeling energetic you can have an evening walk along Grange-Over-Sand's famous seaside promenade!

After breakfast on Sunday we will head to the picture-perfect village of Hawkshead, the prettiest in the district. Here we will have time to wander, seeing the Grammar School attended by Wordsworth and the house where Beatrix Potter once lived, now home to a gallery of her work. We are thinking of adding an optional hike - watch this space!

The next stop will be Grasmere, the location of Dove Cottage - former home of the Romantic poet William Wordsworth. We’ll have plenty of free time to absorb the atmosphere of this idyllic spot, and enjoy a lovely lunch in one of the cafes or pubs. You could even hire a rowing boat and head out on to the beautiful lake. Don't forget to sample some of the famous Grasmere gingerbread!

The next section of the journey takes us along the side of the stunning Thirlmere Lake, surrounded by forested peaks. We will take a walk along a tiny footpath to the ancient and mysterious stone circle at Castlerigg, surrounded by incredible views of the fells. Then back to our comfortable hotel for dinner, drinks and relaxation!

After another scrummy breakfast and bidding farewell to the Cumbria Grand, we will drive to Ravenglass, when we will take a hour and a half round trip on the La'al Ratty steam railway though incredible mountain scenery in the wild west side of the Lakes. In between train journeys we can wonder to the tiny village of Boot and see the ancient packhorse stone bridge. Next stop will be stunning Muncaster Castle, home of an Owl sanctuary and some lovely gardens not to mention breathtaking scenery. We can grab lunch here in the old stables cafe before we get back on the coach and make our way back to London, full of happy bank holiday memories!

***Editors Update! (From Cath). This sounds great so I'm going! It's Becca's trip and will run to the timetable stated but there's no way I'm going to the lake district without doing a hike so I am going to buy a brand new Ordnance  Survey Map and do a hike on the second day between Hawkshead and Ambleside. It'll be somewhere between 6-9 miles, I hope to take in a stretch of lake Windermere,  and Becca will pick us up to join the rest of the day's schedule afterwards. Yey! it's not included in Becca's trip it's just a bit of additional fun f you want to come with me, it'll be a new route  so you need to be up for adventure/chaos!!!! The hike's free! You can skip the hike or decide when we're there!!...(come on I haven't lost anybody yet!) :)***

*** Update

So it looks like first part of day two will be about nine miles, first three either starting Furness to Hawkshead either way trekking over the Furness Fells, taking views of Esthwaite Water to the west, and then circling east out of Hawkshead for an additional 6 miles taking in a two mile stretch on the banks of the world famous Lake Windermere!!!

We'll then rejoin the non hiking contingent of the group in time to visit Castlerigg Stone Circle. ***

Meeting Point:

We will meet the coach outside Union Car Park on Harrington Road, South Kensington. This is 2 mins walk from the tube station, I will email detailed directions before we go! We will be dropped off in the same place on our return.

ONLY £170 per person - based on two people sharing a twin or double room. I will pair you with someone if you're coming on your own and want to take this option... its a great way to save money and make a new friend!

Hi all, I hope you're all well and looking forward to the weekend! I thought those of you sharing who don't have a plus one might like to know who you are room mates with so you can say hi on the coach tomorrow - so Sahil is with Asko, Janet is with Sally, Amandeep - you are with a lovely lady called Laryssa from another Meetup group I run, and similarly Angelica is with Wendy from my other group. Billie is with the lovely Grace (who isn't on Meetup). And last but not least, unlucky Cath is stuck with me..!
