The oldest of the Runic alphabets dates back nearly 2,000 years and examples of this written language can be found in lands ranging from Europe to parts of Asia, and some have even been discovered in North Africa and on the North American continent. The Norse, a culture of legendary might, had a staggering influence on the development of other cultures they encountered, many of whom adopted versions of the Futhark into their own written language.
The Romans who both conquered, and were conquered by the Germanic tribes observed how the use of Runes was far more than just for writing. The Roman historian, Tacitus, in his Chronicles called 'Germania' observed how the runes were used for divination, and even rituals and charms. He learned that the Runes were believed to have come from the Norse Gods, and so were symbols of divine power.
Come and join us on this 8 week course as we explore the remarkable history and lore of the Ancient Runes. Each of the 24 Elder Futhark will be deeply explained, and we'll learn how to use them in divination, charms, spells, and rituals that were discovered in the Eddas, as well as some new ones that have been adopted by modern runemasters of today.
In addition, this is a very hands-on workshop, and you'll have your chance to make your own runes, bind-runes, charms, pendants, gandr (rune wands), and rune staves. All tools and materials are included in the price of the class.
