This Russian Orthodox Chant Project is an outreach of Axios San Francisco East Bay*
1. Come and sing with us - We are a new start-up choir in the SF Bay area.
- If you want to sing in a choir
- If you like a cappella (vocal only) chorus
- If you can imagine singing rich four part harmony
- If you can imagine singing in a choir whether you go to church or not
- If you love Russian Chant – simple melodies, rich harmonics, and flowing rhythms.
2. Come and sing with us
- Imagine not being afraid of singing off key – being supported in learning to sing as a group
- Imagine learning to sing on key with loving support of your friends
- We are patient, nurturing and not a professional choir... but we will eventually sing like angels.
- Beginners are welcome. Experienced singers are welcome and deeply appreciated
3. Come and sing with us
- We are focussed on a cappella Russian Orthodox sacred music sung in English... but not exclusively.
- We will also be singing the sacred music of Anglican Evensong and Lutheran Vespers and Compline as well.
- We are looking for churches that want us to sing and can provide a sacred space for us to practice.
- No a cappella or previous singing experience is necessary - we help each other learn
4. How are we unique?
- A cappella – human voices are the only musical instruments.
- English words – not old Slavonic or Greek lyrics – we can understand everything we are singing.
- The meaning of the words governs the rhythm – the chanting is not sung with fixed beats or measures.
- Amateur – everyone can sing; experienced singers enthusiastically help the beginning singers.
- Simple four part harmony – rich harmonics, easy melodies to sing.
- We are egalitarian – we sing as a balanced team – there are no divas.
- Our voices are interdependent – each part supports the rest of the parts
- Our intention is to help make the music of Saturday evening Choral Vespers and Evensong available to Christians all the way from San Jose & Fremont up through Berkeley & San Francisco.
