Shouldn't your tea selection match the quality of your cheeses and wines?

The best way to learn about tea is to sample it. True, but how to choose from all the varieties, old and new? How do I learn what I most appreciate? Lacking know-how, a tea lover is forced to rely on advertising, reviews, and online chatter -- and to purchase quantities of tea before they know if they really like it.

Our meetup group will help demystify the tea shopping experience -- in a framework of friendly social events: group tastings, swaps, parties, samples and door prizes. The organizer brings a tea sample for each meetup attendee. Members and their guests have ample opportunity to sample numerous types, flavors and styles of tea. Along with relaxing and drinking tea, we learn the sources of tea, it's history and culture, which give a rich context to the experience.

Tea is the drink of smart women, health-conscious businessmen, and internet technical wizards. It is replacing coffee as folks discover the health benefits and variety offered by tea, and the relaxation of tea culture. Get prepared for that new, trendy friend to ask, "Do you have tea?" (and they don't mean standard Lipton). Whether it's British tea in a flowery pot, Asian green in a handmade cup, or South American maté in a traditional gourd, tea is the discerning person's beverage of choice.

Why tea? Where to begin? Junk food cravings are tamed by choosing, instead, from a variety of tea -- sweet or tangy, spicy or mellow, punchy or delicate. Tea is proven to reduce cholesterol, and may reduce cancer risk. The caffeine in tea is "lower and slower" than that of coffee, but longer-lasting. Tea contains other alkaloids which de-stress, creating a more balanced effect. Towards evening, switch to caffeine-free herbal tisanes (some are even sleep-promoting). Bonus Points: Tea stays fresh many times longer than coffee.

Why Now? Unavailable just a few years ago, a wondrous variety of teas can now be found in online and local markets, as a response to the growing demand. An increasing amount of tea blending is being done in the United States. At the same time, newly-aware tea drinkers are keen to find out how to get the best from each cup.

Why join? To attend meetups and thereby increase the joy we experience. To find the teas, and tea equipment. which best suit your taste, style, and wellness goals. To receive all the benefits of belonging. To offer your home once in a while for a meetup (not required, but appreciated) in addition to, or instead of, your suggested financial contribution.

Join us to relax and celebrate our rapidly developing local tea culture!

What members are saying

People should join this group if they want to get to know new folks and learn more about tea at the same time. ...

IF you love tea and have felt like an outcast because you don't drink coffee - this is the group for you! I've already learned some things even though it was only a meet and greet meeting.

Your organizer's refund policy for San Antonio Tea Enthusiasts

Your organizer will refund you if:

  • If the group is dissolved (ceases to exist), whatever money remains will be divided up among the members at the group's final meetup. If somebody had very recently paid their $12, they might get a bigger share. I will do my best to be fair.
