Introduction

Hi, I'm Kim - Treasurer of Samba Ottawa. I've been a part of this group for about 1 1/2 years and love the music. My fellow sambistas are a great group, love to socialise and have a blast playing Samba together!

What attracted you to this group?

I find the music infectious and hard not to love. Once you hear it, it's hard to stay still. All the Sambistas (group members) seemed like real nice people and they they were all having a lot of fun playing with Samba Ottawa. They offered a "Beginner course" through the Community Association which was a great intro into the music, instruments and playing as part of a fun "Community Band". Our "Maestra" or band leader - Isabelle, has a degree in Music and even at her young age, is a very capable instructor being both patient and supportive of "newbie "sambistas! She also has the band going in New directions by introducing a horm section as well as guitars and keyboards for some arrangements. We now have quite a varied repertoire which makes it even more fun.

Do you have any musical experience?

Yes, I played percussion in High School but that's "ancient history". I've played Djembe for about 4 years now and play regularly with DrumFuzion. I also play Marimba and recently purchased a set of Congas to make my percussion playing, a more rounded experience. Whether it's playing shakers, claves, surdo's or hand drums, it's all great fun!

What do you hope to gain from the experience?

I've already met a ton a great people through Samba Ottawa and drumming and I hope to continue to be able to do so. Ottawa's drumming community is quite small (and rapidly growing) also extremely supportive as long as you give it your best and enjoy yourself in the process. I learn something new every week so it's never boring. Brazilian-Afro-Cuban is a new genre for me musically and I'm loving it!!
