Scared to try the light rail system in LA or are you a rail expert? Either way, here is a good opportunity to join us on a Metro Tour of Downtown Los Angeles! Yes, we will be riding the light rail trains and walking everywhere (walking will be minimal). We will meet at street level of the Pershing Square stop of the Red Line. We will tour the Grand Central Market (filled with many grocery items and eateries you don't find in our South Bay neighborhoods), the Bradbury Building (with its elaborate ironwork - the site of many television shows and movies), ride the Angels Flight (if it is running) and then jump back on the train and head to Chinatown for lunch at Yang Chow's (Slippery Shrimp - yum).
We want to meet at the Metro Red Line Pershing Square - North Exit at 9:45 am. To do that we have two group leaders; Ray who will lead a group from the Marine Station in Redondo Beach (Green Line), and Nina who will be leading a group from the Willow Station in Long Beach (Blue Line). Ray will be at the El Segundo Station (at El Segundo and Nash) at 8:15 am and will leave on the first train after 8:30 am. This is a change from our original plan, which I will explain later. Nina will meet her group at the Willow Station at 8:30 am and leave on the first train after 8:45 am. Be prepared to get to your starting point a few minutes early to find parking and to purchase an all-day pass (we may be on as many as six trains and the all day pass is the best deal) on your TAP card (just $5.00). For those who do not have a TAP card, you will need an additional $1.00 to purchase one. I have three extra TAP cards which I will loan to the first three people I meet up with at the El Segundo Station.
Note: there are no restrooms in the train stations or on the trains, so remember this when taking in your morning Joe. Also, dining at Yang Chow will be family style. I really do not want to squabble over the bill, so it will be divided evenly by the number of people attending. If you order alcohol, you will need to contribute more. Please bring cash (small bills preferred).
Contact numbers will be provided to those attending via email.
Bring comfy shoes, cash for food and snacks, and...... your curiosity.
