Ringling B&B circus clowns will make an appearance at the Columbia ice skating rink tomorrow (Saturday) from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.
Thanks to our member Mary Nettles for catching this!
Of course, SCAAL does not oppose circus clowns , but we'll be handing out literature to educate folks about the suffering of elephants, tigers and other exotic animals trapped in circuses, and encouraging them to learn more before purchasing tickets to Ringling's March shows.
For effective leafleting, simply make eye contact, smile brightly and ask, "did you get one of these?" or say something like, "free information about circus elephants". If someone asks for additional information, it's a good idea to have your own personal 'elevator speech' at the ready. You can also refer people to circuses.com, or ask them to search Youtube or Google for "circus cruelty" or "Ringling abuse" when they get home.
I also have a limited number of DVDs showing undercover video of baby elephants being cruelly broken and 'trained' by Ringling.
We'll have informational flyers for the adults/parents and coloring books and stickers for the kids.
(Note that it's possible we'll be asked to leave, so you may not want to drive a long distance for this).
If anyone is interested, we can stop somewhere nearby afterwards for lunch and discuss effective ways to educate the community about the cruelty inherent in animal circuses.
