Leave LA behind for a day and come out to Joshua Tree National Park for a 7.2 mile, 1,200 foot elevation gain hike to visit the Lost Palms Oasis, the largest palm oasis in the park.
Wintertime is a great season for visiting this nearby National Park. The daytime temperatures are tolerable (highs normally in the 70s) and wildflowers bloom all over the normally barren landscape. If you have thought about visiting this park, this is an excellent opportunity to do so.
Though we are meeting at 7:30 am, the hike begins at 10:15 am (due to the distance from Los Angeles), finishing by 4:00 pm, with an expected return time to our meeting point of 7:00 pm. Please meet either at the meeting point or at the trailhead. We may also grab dinner after the hike somewhere along the 10 freeway, depending on the consensus.
BRING: Though we are hiking in winter, there is still the possibility of extreme temperatures. You should have at least 2 liters of water, snacks/lunch, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a comfortable backpack. You may also want to bring long sleeve shirts and pants. Due to the rocky terrain, comfortable hiking boots are strongly recommended.
Meeting Point: Meet at the Park and Ride lot at the corner of Del Mar Avenue and Norwood Place, San Gabriel, CA promptly at 7:30 am (3 blocks north of the Del Mar Ave exit off the 10). We will leave by 7:35. Or meet at the trailhead at 10:15 am (take 10 freeway east to JT south entrance, travel 7 miles north and turn right at Cottonwood Springs, and drive to end of the road and meet by the kiosk).
Due to the distance travelled to the trailhead by car, you may want to consider carpooling from our meeting point. However, the Sierra Club does not involve itself in, and does not take any responsibility for, carpooling and leaves it to each individual to make his/her own arrangements to the trailhead. If you do choose to carpool, please consider the driver, the 300 mile roundtrip distance. Entrance fees at Joshua Tree National Park are $15 per vehicle, or free if you have a current America the Beautiful National Parks pass. Please bring any relevant passes you may have.
