FREE Symphony Concert - July 9

PLEASE NOTE — You must RSVP here to attend this free event: http://yoursongyourstory.org/rsvp/

Opening Reception by Downtown Restaurants: 6:00-7:30pm
Performance: 7:30-8:30pm

Your Song, Your Story: A Musical Tapestry of and for San Diego, is a two-year audience engagement initiative that departs from the San Diego Symphony’s traditional approach to community engagement by inviting residents of historically underserved neighborhoods to participate in the creation and performance of art. Music, stories and dance were contributed by people of all ages and backgrounds. These contributions were made via various forms of media technology at community sites and festivals including camcorders and cell phone videos. Individuals were encouraged to submit their recordings directly onto our website. Over 320 submissions were then considered for inclusion in an original orchestral piece and 18 submissions were chosen. The final work is a multi-media piece that will be performed for the public free of charge. Performances of the new work are planned for an audience of at least 5,000 people, including 2,000 at Copley Symphony Hall in July, 2014.

(CLICK HERE for a recent story about composer Bill Conti and Your Song, Your Story on KPBS-FM! And CLICK HERE for the full 15 minute interview!)

In order to engage community members to participate in the co-creation of the Your Song, Your Story original composition, the San Diego Symphony sent small ensembles of its musicians to community sites in ethnically diverse communities. They have been performing in ensembles, introducing the project, and providing opportunities for community members to record their songs, stories and dances. The videography team composed of our professional videographer and a team of volunteers also attended and videotaped performances, stories, and captured video footage at community festivals during the months between March and August 2013. The main point I wanted to express was how very please I was with the community performances. I was a pleasure to see the interaction of the orchestra with the community and how it was very supportive of those performances. Some of the performances were also very good, especially the dancing and the drum pieces. Indeed, I liked the “poor” performances even better. Their amateurish performance made it all the more endearing because their heart and soul came through. I so much enjoyed how this was a reflection of the diverse communities of San Diego and how it came together to give the evening a hometown spirit that went beyond the music. Thank you Judy for hosting this event.

the lobby was just too crazy at 6:15 for us to wait for 45 minutes in the line, so we left before they let anyone in.

Great experience. Yet the show could've been better. I'm guessing someone cut some corners to get an extra piece of the grant pie. :)

I thought Symphony's were like 2 hours long or is that too long?

      July 9, 2014

    • Rachel M.

Hey, Frances! This particular show was billed to last only an hour. You're right that symphony shows are usually longer.

Well said Phil! I really enjoyed myself, Copley Symphony hall was simply pregnant with excitement! The venue was such a pretty place & I finally was able to get to hear our San Diego Symphony & I loved it. Thank you so much Judy, I was late so misses out on meeting up with our meetup group. Hope to get to do so next time!

I arrived just in time for the Concert and had to sit on the second floor. I had come to check out the quality of the SD symphony but did not expect much. From this event, I could not make a judgment about the interpretive ability of conductor or the symphony, since the evening did not involve the classical music familiar to me. The first piece, , however, did give me a pleasant surprise that the orchestra was at least technically competent. continue below.
