Join us for another fun and enlightening tour of the Mingei Museum in Balboa Park. This time around we'll focus on cats & quilts: the Maneki Neko and Bold Expressions exhibits. Our tour guide, Kathy, also will introduce us a new exhibit, Northern Stars: 20th Century Finnish Design.
After the tour you are welcome to join us for lunch at the nearby Sculpture Court Cafe or the Prado. You may revisit the museum any time the day of the tour with the $5 group admission.
We had a great time on our last visit to the Mingei, and if you've never been before I highly recommend checking it out. If you're anything like me it may soon become one of your favorite museums in the park.
See you there! :)
About the museum: Established in 1978, Mingei International Museum is a non-profit public institution dedicated to the understanding and appreciation of art of the people (mingei) from all cultures of the world. The Museum's collection now comprises more than 19,600 objects of folk art, craft and design from 141 countries.
The Museum's Founder and Director Emerita is Martha Longenecker, Professor of Art Emerita, San Diego State University. As an artist craftsman who studied the art of pottery-making in Japan, she became acquainted with and learned from the founders and leaders of the Mingei Association of Japan who inspired her to carry the vision of mingei to the U.S.A.
The Museum has six exhibition galleries, a multimedia education center, a theater, The Collectors' Gallery/Museum Store and an Art Reference Library.
