JavaScript jQuery Demo, Tricks, and Tips

For our first meetup, our organizer, Jeff Cogswell, will give an introduction to jQuery. As part of the intro, we'll do a very brief coverage of some JavaScript constructs that are vital understanding jQuery. After that, we'll take you through adding jQuery to your page, then using jQuery to search your page for elements based on CSS selectors, and then using some of the cool jQueryUI controls (such as buttons, dialogs, tabs, autocomplete) to make an awesome-looking, interactive website.

NOTE: We need a place to meet! If you know of a place that can host up to 40 people, please let us know! Thanks! If not, our hosts and sponsor will find a place and let you know plenty of time in advance.

Good start. Impressed with the knowledge and experience of the attendees.

As the first meetup, it seemed like it was hard to know what to expect in terms of level of knowledge of the attendees, and the target was a bit low. From the discussion we had, looks like that will move to a bit deeper level in future meets.

Any suggestions on where to park this evening? Is there a near by parking garage?

Will you be covering the same topics at the Ann Arbor meetup that you will at the one in Toledo?

    September 18, 2012

    • Jeff C.

Probably not. There will be some people at both, so I'll cover different topics.

Will the meetings always be in Ann Arbor for this group?

    1 · September 18, 2012

    • Jeff C.

Right now I'm considering alternating Ann Arbor and Detroit. Or maybe do some midway between the two cities. Most of our members are from Ann Arbor, but we have many in the Detroit area as well.

We have a location AND our first sponsor! Let's all thank Dave Koziol and his company, Arbormoon Software, Inc. We'll be meeting at their offices. They are located at 212 S. 4th Avenue, Suite 2D, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104. (And in case you're wondering, the ABC Brewpub location fell through.)

It's looking like it'll be at the ABC Brewpub in Ann Arbor in their Tap Room. I'm waiting for confirmation; I'll let you all know hopefully by Tuesday morning.

Hey everyone, Monday we should finalize the location for Thursday's meeting, and I'll make an announcement. I'm looking forward to meeting you all!

Hey Jeff, I don't know if this is possible or not, but if you are meeting in Ann Arbor, maybe we can share the ride sometimes. I don't mind driving. I'm glad to see you've got a good group developing. Cheers!

Sounds like a great plan! And yeah, the new JavaScript group is really taking off already -- 54 people, and 23 are coming to the first meetup.

      September 11, 2012

    • Jeff C.

...Actually 17 have signed up. I looked at the other number. Still pretty good!

Thanks for the input on when to have the meetings. We're already up to 45 members! I don't think it's possible to find a time that everybody can attend. But I'm wondering if we might do two meetings a month? I'm just the one who started the group; I want it to be for all of us, and I hope to hear from as many of us as possible before we all make any final decisions.

Instead of every other week, it can be the first and third week of the month (or the second and fourth, take your pick). That way it's easier to schedule for it on a monthly basis.

    • Laura M.

Vary the day of the week - odd-numbered months it's Thursdays, even-numbered months it's Wednesdays. Or something like that. Predictable schedule, varied days. Then it'll be easier for more people to make it to both kinds of meetings.

I would rather not do weekends. Any day of the week in the evening it's fine for me

    August 30, 2012

    • Mike B

Likewise, while I can sometimes buy out time on the weekend, I would prefer not to.

Thursdays are bad for me, good topic tho

    August 30, 2012

    • Matt R.

I belong to (2) groups ... one that meets the 1st Wed of the month, and the other that meets the 3rd Wed of the month (MIGANG .NET User Group) ... so any day either than those would work for me.

      1 · August 30, 2012

    • Laura M.

Saturday afternoons. It's the only time that isn't already spoken for ... although Wed&Fri are ok if we start around 5 or 6.
