The James Beard Foundation has just announced the semifinalists for this year's restaurant award and Tar & Roses is the list in the Best New Restaurant category. It is also on LA Magazine's top 10 new restaurant for 2012.
Former "The Next Iron Chef" contestant in 2010 and Los Angeles native, Andrew Kirschner (Wilshire Restaurant, Joe's, Table 8, Chadwick) creates a rustic menu of wood-fire grilled specialties at his Santa Monica establishment. The menu is hyperseasonal, which means dishes change regularly. But most everything that comes out of that wood-fired oven is worth trying. Expect duck breast, octopus skewers with salsa verde, and assorted small plates. The braised lamb belly is the most popular, swimming in its own juices and topped with a minty apple chutney, is as rich and fatty as it sounds but also warming and delicious as are the skate wing and roasted snap peas. "Tar Suppers" for parties of four or more include whole goose and standing rib roast, and must be ordered five days in advance.
Because the menu is more known for their small plates, it would be advantageous for us to do family style for many or all of the menu items. They do also offer big plates for those that want their own entree, but I would recommend sharing the many small plate items to sample the bold and lusty flavors of their rustic wood-fire plates.
