The Lady From Shanghai (1948): Funhouse passion

Post-movie dinner option will be Cafe Renzo (click for info). We will host a table for a maximum of eight (8) at Renzo, at 7:30 PM.

RENZO UPDATE: Table is now full. Thanks!

UPDATE!! SECOND DINNER OPTION: Because of the surge of interest, Jan has decided to relocate the second dinner table from the Creamery, to Cafe Epi. If you'd like to join her, post the Comment "Epi" in the comments below, so she can get a head count. For those who already responded, we'll count your "Creamery" comment as a vote for Epi. No need to update, unless you're canceling. After dinner, we'll bring the groups together, at Epi, for coffee, dessert... and maybe even some trivia! Thanks!

For the movie: Meet on the balcony landing at 5:30 PM.

The Stanford Theatre does not accept credit cards, so come prepared with $7 cash for your ticket.

And now, on with the show!

The Lady From Shanghai (1948) Starts: 5:50 PM, Ends: ~7:20 PM

Starring: Orson Welles, Rita Hayworth, Everett Sloane
Director: Orson Welles
Plot: An itinerant, Irish sailor crosses paths with a mysterious blond and her rich, creepy, crippled husband, and finds himself in the middle of a murder plot so complicated no one will know who the killer and who the victims will be until the last body hits the floor. Welles pushes expressionist style beyond the extreme, climaxing in the justifiably famous "funhouse" scene that's every bit as brilliant as Hitchcock's shower, in Psycho. See it on the Big Screen!

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful time. The movie plot didn't make a lick of sense and Welles's Irish brogue was thicker than San Francisco fog but the house-of-mirrors shoot-out alone was worth the ticket price.

I'm off work but sick. I might go to the movie but don't want to take away someone's chance for a dinner seat so I'm changing my RSVP to no. Never seen this one. I was really looking forward to finally seeing it & attending one of these. Hopefully next time. :)

I'm too confused now Jan. Don't know yet what I'll feel like eating on that evening. But don't worry about me, it's all about the movie and who knows what mood I will be in after. ;-)

From the SF Chronicle: "...the real treat (for me) is "The Lady From Shanghai." I admit it, this flawed Orson Welles film is my favorite movie of all time. In his younger days Welles was an amateur magician, and it shows. Francois Truffaut wrote of the 1948 film, partially shot in San Francisco, that Welles "transforms each episode into a showpiece. The only raison d'etre ... is the cinema itself." http://www.sfgate.com/default/article/Bay-Area-repertory-picks-Oct-24-27-4920252.php
