Force of Evil (1949): Mob noir -- in iambic pentameter...??

If you'd like to have dinner after the movie, please note that in your RSVP, so we can get a head count. We'll go to Cafe Epi (click the name for info), at 7:30 PM. Order and pay at the counter. We'll meet around 5:45 PM, IN THE BALCONY.

The Stanford Theatre does not accept credit cards, so come prepared with $7 cash for your ticket.

And now, on with the show!

Force of Evil (1947) Starts: 6:00 PM, Ends: ~7:20 PM

Starring: John Garfield, Thomas Gomez, Marie Windsor
Director: Abraham Polonsky
Plot: A mob lawyer figures out a way to consolidate all the numbers rackets in NYC into one, big, mob-controlled operation. The only problem is his older brother runs one of those small-time rackets, and he doesn't like the idea of being pushed out of business. Shot on location, this is a stunningly tough, terse thriller, made even more unusual by dialog that's nearly in iambic pentameter. Really. Listen for it... One of Martin Scorsese's favorite movies -- don't miss it!

Loved the dialogue in this one. Only once or twice did the iambic pentameter format get in the way of the story. Very well done.

The stylized dialog only adds to the off-kilter quality of the story: It seems foreign yet familiar. I love the sound and look of the movie: The rat-a-tat-tat dialog (esp. Garfield's), and the Weegee-esque visuals, like the climactic scene in the restaurant and Garfield's descent to the river. A real gem.

Love those film Noir. Came early for Treasure of the Sierra Madre. "I don't have to show you no stinking badge". Classic. Sorry I couldn't stay for dinner. Next time.

Meetup changed the UI, so now, you have to add a Comment, rather than being able to comment as part of your RSVP. Another one of HQ's "improvements" that no one asked for! Thanks for the note!
