The Lady Eve (1941): Card sharks and snakes don't mix...

If you'd like to have dinner before the movie, please note that in your RSVP, so we can get a head count. We'll go to Pluto's (click for info; get a map, here), at 5:45pm. If you aren't joining the group for dinner plan to meet around 7:15 PM, IN THE BALCONY for the movie. We'll also go for coffee/tea/sweets and trivia after the movie. PLEASE RSVP UNDER THE COMMENT SECTION IF YOU PLAN TO JOIN US FOR DINNER.

The Stanford Theatre does not accept credit cards, so come prepared with $7 cash for your ticket.

And now, on with the show!

The Lady Eve (1941) Starts: 7:30 PM, Ends: ~9:00 PM

Starring: Barbara Stanwyck, Henry Fonda, Charles Coburn, Eugene Pallette
Director: Preston Sturges
Plot: A trio of shipboard card sharks sets their sights on the nerdy, herpetologist heir to an ale fortune, but things go a bit cockeyed when the lady falls for the goofy mark. Stanwyck was never funnier, and Fonda is surprisingly appealing as the male ingenue. One of Preston Sturges' very best films -- they don't make comedy this witty anymore (sigh). The card game scenes with the great Charles Coburn alone are worth the price of admission ("Well would ya look at that: I could have sworn one of you would have four aces!")

Psssst ... Steven (on the attendees' list) will be celebrating his birthday by attending this meetup to see The Lady Eve. He is turning 29 ... plus a few decades. :-)

I prefer to think of it as 29 with 30 years experience. Thanks Belinda, for the special note, and thanks to everyone else for yet another wonderful meetup.

So sorry I wasn't able to get out of SF in time to make the movie, I was really looking forward to it. The traffic was absolutely horrendous getting out of downtown San Francisco, took me an hour to get four blocks, there apparently was a big event at Union Square, streets blocked off, people driving in to try to get to it, and leaving kids off.

Interesting how many times this movie has been remade with slight variations.

'It’s a Wonderful Life' and other movies that must not have a sequel." (Go through the slide show...it's pretty humorous.)

      And Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Yes, that was pile of sarcasm! I don't mind sequels because they extend the story line (as long as it's faithful to the spirit of the film, which this SNL parody was not!: http://www.youtube.co... ) However, I am not keen on REMAKES of classic films because remakes potentially dilute the film's audience and showings, which can undermine the film.
