Meet John Doe (1941) & The Miracle Woman (1931): Stanwyck -- cynic with a heart

If you'd like to have dinner after The Miracle Woman, please note that when you RSVP (add a Comment, using the "Join the Conversation" box), so we can get a head count. We'll go to Crepevine (click for info). We'll meet on the balcony landing around 3:15 PM, for Meet John Doe. If you just want to come for The Miracle Woman, look for us in the balcony. We'll keep an eye out, when the doors open. Dinner will be around 7:30 PM.

The Stanford Theatre does not accept credit cards, so come prepared with $7 cash for your ticket.

And now, on with the show!

Meet John Doe (1941) Starts: 3:35 PM, Ends: ~5:40 PM

Starring: Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward Arnold
Director: Frank Capra
Plot: A fired reporter creates a modern, despondent everyman on the verge of suicide, but when "he" catches on with the readers, her bosses smell a good thing! They produce a genuine fake, which inspires a whole movement. But the cynical ruse gets upended, when the reporter discovers she has a conscience.

Then stick around for a double-dose of Stanwyck's modern woman…

The Miracle Woman (1931) Starts: 5:50 PM, Ends: ~7:20 PM

Starring: Barbara Stanwyck, David Manners
Director: Frank Capra
Plot: When a young woman's father dies broken and unappreciated in his church, she decides that there's no point to religion if you can't make a buck at it! Fake miracles are just the ticket! But ironically, her cynicism leads her back to her faith. Another example of the essential, pre-Code, Stanwyck persona: Overtly tough, and cynical, but decent at the core.

Enjoyed "The Miracle Woman" and the dinner conversation afterwards. Wish that I could have made "Meet John Doe" too. Perhaps another time...

I especially enjoyed John Doe. Excellent. I am hooked on old movies. I like the romance, and the storylines, the dialogue. I am so tired of modern movies with all the props, sex, and lack of developed storyline. Thank you.

I agree on the classic films -- unlike today's films, you can count on them. In fact, these days I often don't read this meetup's classic film write-up beforehand; I let myself be pleasantly surprised. Of all the classic films I've seen so far, the one that I cared for the least was "The Bitter Tea of General Yen", which wasn't half bad and didn't expose me to the horrors that many contemporary films would!
