Death Valley "Road Trip" and hike (4-5 days)

Here's the tentative plan:

  • Leave the Bay Area early on Dec 28, arriving at Death Valley late afternoon. People can either camp or stay in a hotel.
  • Dec 29 and 30 we'll explore the Park, hiking through canyons, over dunes, etc.
  • Dec 31: Some people may leave early to return home on the 4th day. Others will stay another day to celebrate New Years (the moon is full!), or may drive to another nearby park--Mojave?--if agreed on in advance.
  • Jan 1: The rest of us will drive home. This group may decide to travel to hot springs on the way home, or other trip-lengthening detours, but that's up to those in each car/carpool.

We'll be staying in the Furnace Creek area, which has both camping (it will be cold at night) and motel rooms at the Furnace Creek Ranch (Furnace Creek Inn is just down the street for those who want more luxury). Each morning we'll carpool to our hikes--we'll aim for a moderate pace, but leave no one behind--this is a hiking group, so I'll assume everyone understands that this is not just car-touring :-)

I'll be posting some files (camping, park map, etc.) in the "Files" section of our Meetup site for people to look at, or you can visit the Death Valley National Park web site.

Hikes:
Once we know who's going, we can make decisions about best destinations (Racetrack Playa is high on my list). We may decide on longer hikes, or multiple shorter hikes, driving between them (there are many 1-2 hour hikes in the park).
If we have cars with "high clearance," we can get down a few roads that are a bit too bumpy for most cars (e.g. I drove the five miles down the bumpy road to Racetrack Playa in my Saturn wagon, but it was quite bumpy and might have been difficult with 4 people in it!); but we'll probably not go down 4-wheel drive roads.

Camping:
Camp sites hold up to 8 people and 2 cars--some are "pull through" others are "walk-in, tent only". We'll make and coordinate reservations in mid-October so we'll be close to each other. I checked reservations on September 27th, and there are plenty of spaces still open.

Motel:
If you want to stay in the Furnace Creek Motel or the FC Inn, make your own reservations now. If you want to share a room, leave a comment below stating your desires/preferences.

Food:
We'll work out the details on food in early December, but plan on having at least your own lunches that you can take with you on hikes (we may coordinate breakfasts and dinners).

Cost:
Each participant will be responsible for:

  • helping with gas if they carpool
  • camping ($18/site/night) or motel (2 queen=$169/night)
  • entrance fee ($20/car)
  • their own food (some may be shared).

A great book is "Geology Underfoot in Death Valley and Owens Valley" by Robert Sharp and Allen Glazner. You can find many used copies here: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&t... I'll bring my copy to our Sibley hike for people to look at.

Average temperatures (hi/lo) for Death Valley last week of December is 55/29, so plan on it being COLD at night. Average rainfall is none, but record is 0.5-1.2 inches, so it is possible (though not likely) we will get rain.

Any suggestions for overnight places to stay? Indoor or Outdoors?

I missed the boat for getting a room at Furnace Creek Ranch (motel) so I made reservations for 4 nights at Amargosa Opera House and Hotel (760) 852-4441, in Death Valley Junction, outside the park. I will share a 2 bed room at the FCR if someone already has a reservation. Alternatively, if you are still looking for a place to stay, I think the Amargosa is the only place relatively nearby; if there are a few of us staying there, we could drive into/out of the park each day to meet the others.

As the case was with Janet, I am looking at places that are 50 miles away at the moment as even Amargosa hotel has filled up. If somebody can share a room, please let me know.

Can we expect the tabulation results from the questionnaire sometime this week?

I live in Sacramento, so unless someone's taking the scenic route through Sacramento, I'll stay in San Francisco the night of the 27th. Could I share someone's ride down there and back? And I prefer staying in a motel; could I share a room with someone? I'll chip in for gas expense, wear and tear on the car and the room.

Also--I have one copy each of Death Valley Region Field Guide and Geologic Guide to the Death Valley Area, California.

One more thing--I'd like to return the night of the 31st, so if someone is leaving that night I would like to share the ride if possible.

Someone who booked a Furnace Creek Ranch room, but recently changed their RSVP to "No", has told me they will wait until tomorrow to cancel it. The room is $215/night, so I'd need some people to share with me. Any takers? Regarding transportation, my truck has off-road clearance, so if we need it to get to Racetrack Playa, I could drive it down. If I'm sharing a ride, perhaps it would be best to meet at an Amtrak station? The first train arrives in Emeryville at 8am.

Thanks to all who came. I had a great time. Everyone was flexible about pace and destinations, and I think everyone went home happy. Dean and I are talking about a repeat next year :-)

Janet, Harry and I stopped (quickly) at Red Rock Canyon State Park (on Highway 14, just north of California City). Amazing rocks (I'll post photos soon)! It's about 3-4 hours outside of DV, and we thought maybe next year have a first night here, to cut the drive from the SF Bay Area into two more reasonable drives. Planning already :-)

Nice thought about Red Rock Canyon. I too stopped there on my way back for a short RR break but did not look around. Note that a lot of 4-wheel day trippers use that park. Probably wont conflict with night camping unless they're a rowdy bunch even then.

I posted most of my photos here: http://trampleasure.net/lee/gallery/main.php/v/album_007/... I haven't added many descriptions, but they are sorted into galleries based on the hikes/areas we went to.

Lee was very enthusiastic about explaining the different formations of the rocks/places. He did a great job organizing the outings and outlining the schedule to everyone. I ended up learning a bunch of things about Geology. Participants were a pleasure to be with.

Lee did a stellar job of organizing this!

Lee did a great job planning the various hikes and accommodating diverse interests. I learned a great deal about rock formations thanks to Lee's knowledge and his ability to communicate.

Awesome road trip! Great job Lee... Most enjoyable crew and it was nice to meet so many other people interested in this stuff. DV is perhaps the most comprehensive location for geological intrigue. I'll mark this on my 2010 calendar! ;)
