Tennessee Valley Beach short hike and picnic (kid friendly)

Just a list minute announcement of a short, kid friendly (I'll have my 8 year old granddaughter with me) hike and picnic.

If you haven't been to Tennessee Valley Beach, it's a treasure that is so close to San Francisco, but you don't have to drive on long, windy roads.

From Highway 1 just west of Highway 101, turn west onto Tennessee Valley Road, then continue to the parking lot at the end of the road (I'm not sure how well Google or Meetup places the trailhead on a map, but just keep driving--about 1 3/4 miles).

The beach has your basic California Coastal geology, but I haven't been out there to investigate it and none of my books have much information. We'll just have to explore it.

We'll gather at 11:30, and leave by 11:45. During this 15 minutes, I'll give a bit of background on the general geology of the area for those haven't heard it already .

The hike is about 1 3/4 miles each way, so plan on about 3.5 miles total. The trail leads gently downhill to the beach, then gently uphill on the way back. Here's a map. We'll probably take a little under an hour to walk to the beach, maybe an hour or two on the beach, then an hour or so walking back.

  • The parking lot is likely to be full by the time we get there, but you can park on the road leading to the lot (you'll see lots of cars parked along the road).
  • Bring a picnic for the beach.
  • Kids are welcome.
  • No dogs please.

I apologize. Brenda and I arrived late due largely to a very long wait to exit SB 101, and then must have taken the wrong trail, getting a beautiful overlook of the Sausalito harbor. We had a nice walk, but are sorry we didn't join you. Hope to meet you people in the near future.

We are just getting off 101 at 11:31, so we probably won't be there until at least 11:45 - Katie and Lee

Would like to join you, as we haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet!
What is the approx. expected return time, as I currently have a 2PM commitment; but might be able to delay that a tad? Any chance that you could start out a bit earlier? Kind regards, Teresa P.S. Can your granddaughter walk comfortably, for 3.5 miles? If so, what a girl! :-)

Teresa, I usually start earlier, but can't this week. The entire trip will be 3-4 hours, but if you want to leave the beach early, the hike out is just a straight shot. Hope to meet you on a hike soon :-)

Thanks for the cool link to photos of the collapsed arch at Tennessee Beach! I don't think I can make this one—I have an event in SF at 3:00. -Mimi
