Sutter Buttes geology hike

  • Nov 9, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • Sutter Buttes

This is not my hike, but some of us have done it before and it's a great hike. I'm not sure of the start time, but last time I did it we stayed in a motel near the Buttes to avoid having to get up at oh-dark-hundred.

Discover the violent origins of this tiny mountain range with Volcanologist Brian Hausback. Brian reveals clues to 1.5 million years of geologic history, uniquely accessible here in the center of the Buttes. Bring food and water and wear sturdy hiking boots.

Feel free to RSVP here, but remember that you need to click the above link to register with the Sutter Buttes Regional Land Trust. You must register in advance for this hike.

If you are looking for a carpool, RSVP here and say such in your comments (but remember, you still need to register here to be officially on the hike :-)

"3 Boot = Challenging: Four to seven miles with the possibility of multiple elevation gains/losses of[masked] ft."

I went to Williams because I did not get email instructions after paying via paypal. There was no clue from the website to where a particular hike is & no tel until you click on "contact us" which I did not do. But all is well as Williams police helped me with getting the tel no of Karen Morrison (I do not have internet access on the road. Do not own a smart phone).

It turned out well and I appreciate the intro to Sutter Buttes. Thanks Lee.

I'm confused. Are me meeting in Williams, or Yuba City at 8??

    November 8, 2013

    • Jeff D.

Please erase the old meeting instructions in your meetup notice next time that indicate Williams.

Sorry for any confusion, I hope everyone made it to the hike OK. I don't think Meetup will let me create an event without a location, and the Sutter Buttes site didn't give the location. I was assuming that anyone who registered with the linked site would be given directions to the meeting place.

Very worthwhile--once decisions were made about the misleading instructions.

It turned out Yuba City was the place were supposed to meet, per separate meeting instructions sent us by the Land Trust. Apparently, the meeting instructions were copied from the last time the Meetup group joined this hike. Ming and Dave went to Williams by mistake and had to then go over to Yuba City. Lee, be sure to erase that part of the meetup next time and put in a correct meeting location.

Hi Judy. Yes, I replied 11/5. Did you get it? I re-sent it today. We're definitely picking you up 6:15 or so at Peet's.

Hi Jeff, No I didn't get your reply. Funny . . . I kept looking for it. OK, I will see you at 615 at Peet's. WhooHoo! I hav wanted to go to Sutter Butte for YEARS. I'm very excited!

I foolishly let "confirmed here' convince me I didn't have to go to Sutter Butte's web site to register. By the time I got around to it, it was full.

Bummer Mark. They have some type of hike going on over there just about every weekend. If you click the link above, then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the arrow at the bottom, you can page through all the upcoming hikes. Some pretty cool ones coming up over the next couple months.

I have wanted to see the Buttes for years. Iis there an easier or shorter hiking route? I would love to go, but age and health probably rule out a 3 boot route.

John, check their website, they have many hikes listed. Most of the land is private property, so the only way you can hike there is with the Trust.

Darn it, would love to do this but it conflicts with a work assignment. Maybe next time.
