Photographing California; two books, two approaches.

Join professional landscape and travel photographer, Gary Crabbe, as he discusses the production of his two latest books, Greetings from California, and Photographing California, Vol. 1 – North. Each book was produced by two different publishers for a completely different set of readers. Gary will outline and highlight his thought processes and choices regarding the different editorial and commercial considerations each project required, and how those played into the role of researching subjects, locations, ideal shooting conditions, and editing images to eventually be included in the books. If you ever wanted to know some of the realities behind the making a book project long before it reaches the press, this will be a great presentation to attend. Afterwards, Gary will be happy to answer questions about images, gear, processing techniques, or the publication processes.

About Gary Crabbe:

Gary Crabbe is a multi-award winning photographer and author with seven published books about California to his credit, including The California Coast, Backroads of the California Wine Country, and his latest, Photographing California; Vol. 1 – North, which won the 2013 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Gold Medal Award as the Best Regional Book. Hi everyone. I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your feedback. This presentation was specific to my shooting of these two books for different audiences. What I see now is the hunger you all have for a presentation more tailored to a How-to format for producing *your* book. So as of reading these comments, I'm already working on creating a brand new presentation all about that. If you all (& Sam) would consider inviting me back again at some point in the future, I think I'll be able to satisfy those types of expectations. Again, I do offer my apologies for having run the clock out on follow-up questions. But as I said before, I'll be happy to answer any questions here. The PPGBA presentation is Sept. 19th in SF. While a bit more business related, it still focuses on my experiences with these two books, rather than a larger "how do I... for my book," broad subject approach. Info:

Kudos to Gary and Sports Basement to put the meetup together, I can' t deny it was great to go, but I had different expectations. The following feedback is made with all my respect and just with the goal that some part of it can help to improve the upcoming ones. The tittle is "two books, two approaches" and we were supposed to discuss topics such as: "editorial vs commercial, considerations each project required, ideal shooting conditions, and editing images to eventually be included in the books..."

The first 45', for the California, Greetings from California, was more like a history class. And for the other 45', we just went over all the photos and some anecdotes. The most interesting moment came with the only Question from an attendant about royalties, but we run out of time.
I wanted to know more about the process of publishing a book, how to sell your ideas, royalty fees, investment vs benefits, issues, how to retouch images when they will be published, choose of paper...

Hi Gary, your presentation was excellent, superb and very inspiring, as I have communicated to you personally. However I agree with Alicia and Meggi, the presentation was not what I expected either. Your imagery is beyond question, you're also known for producing photo books. That's what I came to learn about, nuts and bolts and how to do one myself someday. Yes, the audience was mix for beginners to more professional photographers as you can see from the some of the comments here. So for those who came for the more professional presentation rather than the enthusiastic camera club one, tell us about PPGBA and when in September is this presentation going to occur and where will it be held. Thus for us more professional photographers we can get the presentation we were expecting. Thank you.

Hi Gary, thank you for your thoughtful response. I would be very interested n the PPGBA event and hope to be able to attend and gain more insight in the publishing business beyond the self-publishing, e.g. Blurb and others. Again, your images were inspiring and your presentation enlightening. Now I look forward to more 'nuts and bolts'. Thank you. BTW, I love your Northern California Book and the tips and locations in there - I had it for a while now.

This was my first photo-related event since moving to SF in January. I really liked all the great information and knowledge that Gary shared - and also the amazing images!
However, I do agree with Alicia that it was not quite what I expected. I'm not in the process of considering a book though, so it didn't matter much to me.

Just thought I'd remind everyone about the Bay Bridge closure at 8 PM. If you're coming from the East Bay you will want to plan accordingly.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
