Secrets of Night Photography with Harold Davis

In a letter to his brother Theo, the great artist Vincent van Gogh wrote, "It often seems to me that the night is much more alive and richly colored than the day." The advent of digital photography has revolutionized the practice of night photography because a digital sensor can record the spectacular colors of the night. These colors are created by light waves in spectrums that are invisible to the naked human eye. For the first time we can truly "see" the world of the night around us.

In this presentation legendary photographer Harold Davis uses examples of his night photography ranging from urban shots of San Francisco to the empty spaces of the eastern Sierra and Death Valley to demystify the practice of night photography. You’ll quickly understand why this genre has become so popular with digital photographers in recent years. Topics covered include:

·         Finding the best subjects for night photography

·         Exposure and focusing at night

·         Safety at night

·         Capturing night scenes with the moon

·         Night photography in the digital darkroom

·         Understanding how to use multi-RAW and hand-HDR techniques in night photography

·         Stacking star trails

I would have been there but was in Yosemite that day. I just went to view the generous video you uploaded, Harold, and although you said it might not be of the best quality for hearing? it is VERY CLEAR. I need hearing aids but had ZERO problem understanding. Excellent presentation and no echo either. Thanks very much for this!

i've enjoyed many of the other sessions i've attended as part of this group much better. his work didn't really speak to me. i found the group to be very disruptive this session compared to all the others i've attended. firing questions throughout the session, even when repeatedly asked not to.

I have been to several of the presentations put on by this Meetup group, and I think this was the best. I liked the combination of tips, humor, and amazing photographs that were presented. This was much more lively as far as Q&A as well.

Very fine photography with an excellent command and explanation of his tools. It would be useful to have a web address which lists all the contacts and necessary tools to do this level of work.

    Sonny,

If there's any way you can get to the city, I can give you a ride back since I'm in Belmont. I actually work in SF, so that's why it would be a one way.

    Let me know.
