Angel Island Photography Tour

This location is shown only to members

The Angel Island Tour is closed. If you wish to attend, please make personal arrangements with the park and ferry. I have notified the park that our group consists of 20 members and payment has been made.

We will take the 10:00 Am Tiburon Ferry because the Blue & Gold Fleet earliest departure from San Francisco is at 10:30AM and is scheduled to arrive at Angel Island about 11:00AM. However the tour starts at 11AM sharp at so we wouldn't have enough time to travel from the ferry landing to the Immigration Services (IS).

Carpooling from the Golden Gate Bridge is an option in which case we will meet in the free parking lot at the bridge. For those who have already paid thru Paypal I will reimburse the $4.50 difference. Parking at the Ferry is free.

Reservations have been made for twenty (20) photographers to tour the IS historical site beginning at 11:00AM. The total cost breakdown per person is:

$13.50 RT ferry from Tiburon which includes state park admission fee.
$7.00 Tour Fee.
$1.10 PayPal fee.
Total: $21.60

This should be a great photo opportunity of an historically important site so do bring your camera and tripod and some B&W for the IS station!

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Keep Shooting!

Thomas

Camping

Camp site (#3) has been reserved for Friday night at a cost of $22.50 to be split among those who camp. The site accommodates up to eight (8) and is a 1.5 mile hike/bike from the Cove. The Tiburon Ferry departs for the Island at 10AM, 11AM, 1PM and 3:00 PM on Friday, 3 April. The last ferry from the Island on Saturday the 4th is at 4:20PM.

The approximate coordinates of the campsite are 37.865874,-122.426351. From the Ayala Cove landing, go north east to the "North Ridge Trail". Follow the trail up to the Fire Road and make a left. Head south for about 1000 feet and turn sharply north. The campsite is ahead 200 yards.

NOTE: The following have confirmed that they will be camping:
Thomas, Steven, Anastacia, Summi, Amy D, Katy.

Tour groups are limited to 30. I have E-mailed the coordinator asking if we could increase the size of our group and hope to have an answer by the weekend. I'll post the reply as soon as I recieve a response. Hopefully they will have some openings as anyone coming from SF will not arrive on the island in time to make the tour. The IS shuttle departs from the Cove at 10:40 and the SF ferry doesn't arrive on the island until 11AM.

I reserved one camping spot for 8 for Friday night.

I apologize for switching the ferry from the Blue & White to the Tiberon ferry but when I went to pay them online the schedule wasn't listed and it didn't indicate if I could purchase tickets today for passage on 4 April. I finally got them on the phone and while they would honor future passage the departure time was inadequate for our purposes.

For those that will be bringing their own bike on the ferry, there is an additional $1.00 RT charge for the bike. Pay the ferry upon boarding.

    Steve,

Absolutely Steve. However I'm planning on taking an early ferry so that I can spend the day touring the island for sunset/surrise photo opportunities and also seeing if I can join one of the tours of the buildings. If you take a later ferry, just come to the campsite - #3. You'll see my tent - a Big Agnes 2 person.

We'll divy the camping fees on the island in cash. The ferry departure times for Friday, 3 April, are: 10AM, 11AM, 1PM and 3PM. Prakash E-mailed me that he is open to any time; I would like to take the 10AM ferry. What about the rest of the campers? We need to know the time.

No Problem Prakash. Depart with the main group on Saturday morning. Remember, the ferry BOARDS at 9:45AM sharp and DEPARTS at 10AM sharp. To be assured of passage, I would be in line at the Tiburon ferry terminal NLT 9:15AM. Once the ferry is full, you will have to wait for th 11AM departure.

Teddy: Yes the tour is of the interior of the Immigration Station Building.

Hey guys. Can someone give me a little more info. I am not doing the camping so will be meeting you all at Tiburon. I have never been on an outing with you guys so I do not know who to look for. Will someone have our ferry tickets, or if we go to the window and say meetup will they know what I am talking about?
    Thanks Katy

Katy, take the ferry pass I E-mailed to you last night to the window and the ferry will exchange it for a real ticket. It's already paid for but you must present them with the pass I sent you yesterday with you name, departure date, and return date, and have ID ready to show if requested. Wayne Lawton has (or had) room available in his vehicle and is departing from the East Bay. Prakash also has room as in departing from the south bay. Contact them or post ride wanted or be at the ferry@9:15

It was so much fun. I am privileged to join a group of real photographers on a photo-shooting day trip to Angle Island today. Their conversation about shooting techniques seems to be from another world, and their collections of shooting toys are jaw-dropping.

And, it's totally a valuable hands-on training for a beginner like me.

    Looking forward to future trips!

A really great tour with a great group of photographers of an historically important site in United States history. This was a tour that I'll remember fot a long time.
  • Steven Christenson
Thomas did a marvelous job handling all of the details. The history of Angel Island also proved much richer and more interesting than I had imagined. I feel fortunate in having spent the night on the island, too and would recommend it as it is the only way to enjoy a sunset and a sunrise from the middle of the San Francisco Bay.

Thanks for organizing. This is something that I definately wouldn't have thought to do on my own. I had a great time, look forward to the next outing.
