The Elephant Riders

The Hive Think Tank is pleased to begin the new year with an exciting panel discussion "The Elephant Riders".
Hadoop has been one of the main foundations of the Big Data revolution.
In this discussion, we will talk to an elite set of technologists who are founders or core-management-team-members of Big Data companies. We will discuss the relevance (or not) of Hadoop for Big Data experiments in the next decade. We will then take a closer look on how BigData infrastructure could evolve and who is best positioned to deliver in this area.

Panelists:

M.C. Srivas, CTO and Co-Founder

Srivas ran one of the major search infrastructure teams at Google where GFS, BigTable and MapReduce were used extensively. He wanted to provide that powerful capability to everyone, and started MapR on his vision to build the next-generation platform for semi-structured big data. His strategy was to evolve Hadoop and bring simplicity of use, extreme speed and complete reliability to Hadoop users everywhere, and make it seamlessly easy for enterprises to use this powerful new way to get deep insights. That vision is shared by all at MapR. Srivas brings to MapR his experiences at Google, Spinnaker Networks, Transarc in building game-changing products that advance the state of the art.

Srivas was Chief Architect at Spinnaker Networks (now NTAP) which built the industry's fastest single-box NAS filer, as well as the industry's most scalable clustered filer. Previously, he managed the Andrew File System (AFS) engineering team at Transarc (now IBM). AFS is now standard classroom material in operating systems courses. While not writing code, Srivas enjoys playing tennis, badminton and volleyball. M.C. has an M.S. in Computer Science from University of Delaware, and a B.Tech. in electrical engineering from IIT Delhi.

Charles Zedlewski, VP Products, Cloudera

Charles Zedlewski is Cloudera’s Vice President, Products, responsible for the  strategy, roadmap and design of Cloudera’s products. Charles brings more than a  decade of experience creating industry leading software products for business  customers. Before joining Cloudera, Charles held a number of different product  leadership roles at SAP, BEA Systems as well as at venture backed startups.  Charles has a bachelor’s degree from Carleton College and an MBA from MIT.

Sanjay Radia, Co-Founder HortonWorks

Mr. Sanjay Radia is a Co-Founder of Hortonworks Inc. Mr. Radia is an Apache Hadoop committer and member of the Apache Hadoop PMC. He was the Architect of the Hadoop HDFS project at Yahoo!. He has also held senior engineering positions at Sun Microsystems and INRIA, where he developed software for distributed systems and grid/utility computing infrastructures. Mr. Radia has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo in Canada.

Jonathan Gray,  Co-Founder & CTO Continuity

Jonathan Gray is an entrepreneur and software engineer with a background in startups, open source and all things data. Prior to founding Continuuity, Jonathan was a software engineer at Facebook where he helped drive HBase engineering efforts, including Facebook Messages and several other large-scale projects from inception to production. An open source evangelist, Jon was responsible for helping build the Facebook engineering brand through developer outreach and refocusing the open source strategy of the company. Prior to Facebook, Jonathan founded Streamy.com where he became an early adopter of Hadoop and HBase and is now a core contributor and active committer in the community.

Moderated by:

Dhruba Borthakur, Facebook

Dhruba Borthakur is an engineer in the Database Engineering Team at Facebook. He has been one of the lead contributors for the Apache Hadoop Distributed File System. He has been associated with Hadoop since its inception while working for Yahoo. He is instrumental in scaling Facebook's Hadoop cluster to multiples of petabytes. Dhruba also is a contributor to the open source Apache HBase project. Dhruba's current focus is to evaluate alternative database technologies that can provide better efficiency than MySQL on Solid State Devices.

Dhruba has an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a B.S. in Computer Science BITS, Pilani, India. He has 20 issued patents. He is the co-author of multiple academic papers in respected conferences like SIGMOD, NSDI and EuroSys. He hosts a Hadoop blog at http://hadoopblog.blogspot.com/

Session 1: Technology Vision

This session will focus whether Hadoop is here to stay.

Session 2: Adoption in the Enterprise

This second part will focus on what it needs to make Hadoop be valuable in the enterprise.

Session 3: Open Source and commercial vendors

This session will focus on the open source nature of Hadoop.

The panel was interesting and the food was good. The 'moderator' was incredibly rude, interrupting each speaker several times, often in the middle of a good point. I lasted about half the meetup, then left, offended.
