Discover The Presidio part 2

The Presidio of San Francisco was established as a military installation in 1776 when Spain still occupied California, Mexico and much of the Southwest. It remained a military base when Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, and again when California became a territory of the United States in 1848. The Presidio was eventually demilitarized in 1989 and turned over to the National Park Service in 1994 after two centuries of military use.

This walk covers the wilder western half of The Presidio starting at the Presidio Transit Center at noon. We will walk Park Trail and Bay Area Ridge Trail to Rob Roy Campground; Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail and Lobos Creek Valley Trail to Battery Chamberlain; and the Batteries to Bluffs trail along Baker Beach to the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion before returning to the starting point.

estimate this hike will cover 6-7 miles including fairly rugged terrain, steep hills and stairs at different points along the way. We'll stop at Rob Roy Campground for a brief rest. We should complete the loop in 4-5 hours.

This is a moderately strenuous hike. Remember to bring water and a snack.

Transportation

As of 1/4/2014, the PresidiGO shuttle operates on weekends for free. We'll meet at the Starbucks* at Pier 1 starting at 11:00 and walk over to the PresidiGO stop at Washington and Drumm street to catch the 11:30 a.m. bus.

The bus arrives at the Presidio Transit Center, a short walk to the Presidio Visitor Center where the group will assemble at noon. Here you can pick up maps and information and use the facilities before we begin walking.

If you are driving, park at Lot F on Lincoln Boulevard which is directly across from the Presidio Visitor Center. Parking is $7 all day. Alternately, you can park free near the Beach Hut Cafe and walk 20 minutes to meet the group at noon at the Visitor Center.

PresidiGO shuttles return from the Presidio Transit Station (start/finish point) every 30 minutes on the half hour.

*Note that you can't take disposable coffee cups on the PresidiGO shuttle, only resuable coffee canisters with lids. So no Starbucks for the shuttle. Sorry!

Thanks everyone for joining the adventure! Each of us hiked 7+ miles and the beer seekers managed another mile - the Bowling Alley and Presidio Social Club were both closed for private parties, so we went to Liverpool Lil's just outside the Lombard Gate.

Hi Denise. Presidio Transit Center is correct. If you drive there, you should park at Lot F (near the bottom of the hill is closest to the Visitor Center and Transit Center) which costs $7 for the day. Alternately, you can part at Crissy Field, or near the Beach Hut Cafe, for free, and meet us at the Visitor Center at noon. I estimate that's a 20-minute walk. If you choose to meet us at Starbucks at Pier 1, the closest stop is Embarcadero station, 5-10 minutes by foot. See you tomorrow!

Andrew, I'm so sorry. I've only now seen I made it on to the hike after all but, like some of the others, I made other plans in the last couple of days. I see you're doing Presidio 1 again on March 1st and it's already full, so I'll have to join the waitlist for that one. Enjoy the day!

I intend to drive to the city for this hike. When googling Presidio Transit Station, the only thing that comes up is Presidio Transit Center. Are they one and the same? And if I decide to catch BART instead, at what BART station should I get off to go to Starbucks?

Hello! Just an fyi, I am short (4'11") and therefore, have short strides. Everyone, of course, who is taller walks more quickly than I do. Do you expect this to be a quick or brisk pace?

    January 6, 2014

    • Andrew M.

Sonia, since it's a large group, you should probably be just fine.
