Sunday Presidio Art Walk

This leisurely hike will pause to appreciate artist Andy Goldsworthy's three Presidio installations -- Spire (2008), Wood Line (2012) and Tree Fall (2013) -- in addition to other great Presidio sites and vistas. Scheduled on a Sunday for those who are usually tied up on Saturday.

Two hiking distances are available: 4 miles and 6+ miles. Both routes begin at the Main Post, stop at Tree Fall, proceed up Lover's Lane and the Tree Line installation to the Presidio Overlook.

We will descend to El Polin Spring for a rest stop before climbing once more to Inspiration Point Overlook. From there, a brief examination of the Spire installation and on to the National Cemetery Overlook.

From here the 4-mile group will take a shortcut back to the Main Post while the 6+ mile group will continue along the Bay Area Ridge Trail to Rob Hill Campground and Immigrant Point Overlook. From there, we drop down to Baker Beach on the Batteries to Bluffs Trail, climbing a long timber staircase to Battery Cranston and the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion for photos.

The 4-mile group will return to the Presidio Visitor Center by about 2:00, the 6+ mile group around 3:30, depending on each group's pace. Both routes are moderately strenuous and occasionally unpaved. Please remember to bring water and a snack.

As of 1/4/2014, the PresidiGO shuttle operates on weekends for free. We'll meet at the Starbucks at Pier 1 and walk over to the PresidiGO stop at Washington and Drumm street to catch the 11:30 a.m. bus. (Note that paper coffee cups are not allowed on the shuttle). The bus arrives at the Presidio Transit Center, a short walk to the Presidio Visitor Center where the group will assemble at noon. Here you can pick up maps and information and use the facilities before we begin walking.

If you are driving, park at Lot F on Lincoln Boulevard which is directly across from the Presidio Visitor Center. Parking is $7 all day. Alternately, you can park free near the Beach Hut Cafe and walk 20 minutes to meet the group at noon at the Visitor Center. These buses return every 30 minutes on the half hour, so it's no problem if you need to leave early. It will take 30 minutes to get back to the starting point.

One option to consider - if you can get to Caltrain, our 11:30 PresidiGO shuttle originates at the 4th St. Depot in SoMa. The rest of us would board at the next stop.

Any problem if I meet the group at the Transit Center?

Sounds good, we should be pulling into the Transit Center just before noon.

Sorry, I forgot about a previous engagement and afraid I would be cutting it too close on the timing

I am driving, so I will be meeting the group at the Presidio Visitor Center at noon. I also want to take a leisurely walk from Beach Hut Cafe to the Visitor Center. See you all Sunday! I am so excited looking forward to my first SF walk.
