Grace Cathedral

Nob Hill's Episcopal cathedral  is a San Francisco landmark, with mosaics by De Rosen, lots of stained glass windows, a replica of Ghiberti's Gates of ParadiseKeith Haring's AIDS Chapel altarpiece, and two labyrinths. It has made appearances in the work of Mark Twain, Alfred Hitchcock and Armistad Maupin. It's an international pilgrimage center that welcomes people of all faiths.

12:00 Meet near the indoor labyrinth. Text Laurie (415)[masked] if you can't find us.

2:30 Meet at the Pete's Coffee kiosk in the lower level to share sketches and chat. If it's not raining we can take our coffee outside and sit in the sheltered courtyard.

Links: Read more about the cathedral here http://www.gracecathedral.org/

Tips: Come early and do a tour. There are free docent tours of the cathedral from 11:30 to 1:30.

Getting there: The #1 and 27 buses go very close, and there are several cable car lines in this area.

Parking is difficult but probably not impossible. Bicycling is only an option for the strong of leg: these hills are steep.

The 11:30 free docent tour jazzed me up for sitting still for 2 hours drawing. I learned about reading a window starting at the bottom and then moving up and vice versa based on when the windows were done. Also the modern stain glass windows on the 2nd level - windows for Einstein, Roosevelt, Ford, and even one of John Glenn landing on the Moon! I recommend that everyone takes this tour. Loved this one Laurie.

I really enjoyed meeting the SF Sketchers and only wish I still lived here so I could join in regularly! I loved sketching in
The beautiful Grace Cathedral and hope to return soon. Thanks to Laurie!

A great place to sketch! Didn't know everyone by name but there was a good vibe.

Enjoyed this immensely. It's wonderful to see how different sketchers approached the space and tackled its challenges.

absolutely great, Lori does so well organizing. The structure is challenging to grasp and put on paper. So great to see everyone's work

The coffee shop is small so let's meet at 2:45 in the sunny park across the street

Might be late or not at all, depending on how my meeting goes. Labyrinth sounds amazing, though!

Hi Laurie - I may be late - I have an errand to run in Oakland in the morning. I am taking your advice on the cycling for this one! Not quite up to it!

Will we be able to paint and sketch or only sketch? I wonder if a wedding will take place that date. It certainly is an architectural icon of SF.

I used to be a member of this church! When I lived in SF. We can call and ask if there is an event. Besides being a congregation it is also open to events, weddings, concerts. However, if there is an event inside there are plenty of places to sketch. They have an outdoor Labyrinth and across the way is Huntington Park (hope I got that name right) that lends great viewpoints and is a good people watching spot. The key is the weather and if it is good, you won't need an indoor space to work in. I haven't been there for awhile so I don't know the capacity/hours of Peet's cafe in the facility. They may have some rules on photography but will probably be OK with sketching and light waterbrushes. Hope this helps.

I went up there probably around November last year, the labyrinth was under construction. I draw from the outside twice. definitely need warm clothes if it is windy. maybe pair of gloves would help too. or 2 blocks away the fairmont hotel will be fun to draw as well. (the giant ginger bread house probably gone but I remember they always have the running toy train in there)
