Under the Bridge at Fort Point

In this well-preserved Civil War fort you can sketch the graceful geometry of the interior courtyard or go up on the roof to draw the underbelly of the GG Bridge and gaze out over the water. If it rains we can sketch canons and clothing inside the museum rooms or sit in the spiraling stone stairways. This museum is free, but donations to the National Park Service are always welcome.

12:30  Meet in the courtyard, just inside the main entrance. Phone/text Laurie (415)[masked] if you can't find us.

3:00  Meet up at the main entrance again to walk together to the Crissy Field Warming hut to share sketches over coffee and snacks. If you need to warm up sooner than that, meet us at the picnic tables on the east side of the Warming Hut.

Dress warmly: the winds can be fierce here, even on the sunniest days. Wear sturdy walking shoes for those uneven stone courtyards and twisting stairways. You might also want to bring a pad or newspaper to insulate your bottom from the cold stone.

Public transport: All Marin (Golden Gate Transit) buses go near there, as well as the 28 and 76 MUNI buses. Get off at the toll plaza or the bridge parking lot on the SF side and walk down the hill a few blocks.

Coming on BART, get off at Montgomery Station and catch the 76 Express from Sutter and Sansome. You would need to catch the 11:30 bus; this only runs once an hour. If you miss the 76, catch a Golden Gate Transit bus. Get off at the toll plaza at the start of the GG Bridge.

(I recommend using the MUNI or Google trip planners for accurate directions and schedules.)

The closest stop on the free PresidiGO Shuttle bus Crissy Field Route is near the Warming Hut.

Car: There is plenty of parking but note that there are now parking meters out here, so come prepared to pay.

Bike: Coming along the waterfront past the Marina is always an enjoyable ride, so long as you don't mind dodging the tourists weaving around on their Blazing Saddles.

It was really great. Interesting perspectives from everyone on one same object: the lighthouse. Laurie's advice was well taken: it's no fun dealing with the Blazing Saddles crowd when you bicycle back via Crissy Field and Fisherman's wharf.
But Fort Point was great. I will go back there again

Beautiful day to be outdoors. I walked 4 miles from my apt to the fort. Temperature dropped drastically in the shade. Tourists were quite respectful of us. Canon demo was interesting too. Thanks Laurie!

I regret I will be out of town and miss this one--a favorite place to draw. One highlight, if conditions are right, are those surfers! There is a good chance they will be out there at low tide.
