Things to sketch: Children exploring the newly re-opened playground (its beautiful design is getting rave reviews). If you'd rather sketch adults, the hill will be carpeted with beautiful bodies soaking up the sun (and staying in the same position for a long time). If you like to sketch things that don't move at all, there are palm trees, Victorian houses and city views. The only challenge will be finding a vacant patch of grass to sit on.
Start at 1:00 pm: Sketch around the playground, on the south end of the park.
Finish at 4:00 pm: Meet up afterwards at Thorough Bread & Pastry cafe, 248 Church Street (between Market & 15th)
Hat, water and sunscreen. If you don't like sitting on the grass, bring a folding chair.
The J-Church runs right by the park. If you're coming on BART, you can walk 4 blocks west from 16th Street station or get off at Civic Center station and transfer to the J-Church. If coming on other MUNI lines, it's a 4 block walk from Castro Street or Church Street Station. Or get the 22-Fillmore bus to Church and 16th street and walk 2 blocks.
Finding a parking spot will be frustrating but not impossible. If you're not daunted by steep hills, look south along Church from the Park, around 22nd Street, or try one of the steep streets west of there.
