Making YouTube Fast

Each month on YouTube, almost an hour of video is watched for every person on Earth. Getting all that video to the viewer as soon as possible is especially important to us, so we've taken on an initiative to make YouTube fast.

In this tech talk, we're going to present some of the projects we've been working on to speed up your viewing experience, including: HTML 5 video, image optimization, network scheduling, and more.

We're really excited to share what we've been up to and discuss techniques to improve performance on your own site.

AGENDA
======

6:30pm: Doors open
Food and drinks (beer!) will be provided

7:00pm: Talk starts
Topics include:
Client-side instrumentation (CSI): Custom real user monitoring (RUM)
Structured page fragments (SPF): Homegrown framework for persisting components across
navigation
WebP: Image optimization
Network Scheduling: Finding more efficient use of network resources
HTML5 <video>: Fine-tuning the video player

8:00pm: Q&A
Chat with YouTubers
Velocity 2014 ticket raffle

Great mix of talks, from general web dev insight to concepts specific to video. Is there somewhere specific we can look for updates on an SPF.js release?

Also, if anyone is interested in video specific stuff, we'd love for you to join us over at SF Video Tech: http://www.meetup.com/SF-Video-Technology/ </shameless plug>

Very interesting talks, presented a number of ideas that I can apply in our applications. Thanks!

I really enjoyed all the details as well as the multiple speaker format. Great job!

The presentation mentioning considerations with TCP slow start got me thinking about optimizing things I hadn't thought about before. Assuming I have unlimited capacity, does anybody have feedback on raising keepalive timeouts to be super high?

If I set connections to timeout after 90 seconds, I can probably reuse all the connections on the next page view and they won't start of slowly.

    - Has anybody played around with this?
    - How about huge values like 5 minutes?
    - Or if I have a super long timeout and all my users are in the US, would I sometimes be better off skipping a CDN (at least on the 2nd page) and going straight to my load balancer / cache since the connection is already open and it won't have to start slowly?

Yes, I know I'll have to test to really know but any war stories would be helpful :)

    This was interesting: http://blog.fastmail.fm/2011/06/28/http-keep-alive-connection-timeouts/

Fantastic presentations! This is all very interesting stuff. I too like the idea of having the short overview and Q&A. Perhaps my only feedback would be to ensure the questions for the Q&A are on the topic of web performance.

It's detailed enough for techies to be interesting, high level enough to touch on many parts of web performance.

Wished there was more details about video upload & download optimizations vs. the actual website's performance, but it was really well thought out, prepared and presented.

Thumbs up guys. Presentation was streaming smooth, with no re-buffering :-)

Very interesting presentation, I really liked the idea of having 5 short presentations with different people/topics

If it will be uploaded, how fast will it be? :)

Will there be a recording, and will it be uploaded to YouTube?

    February 19, 2014

Is there any streaming for this?
